PERRY CHENNELL'S BRUTAL SEX ATTACK IN CHERTSEY: SENTENCE INCREASED TO 12 YEARS

In September 2013, the Court of Appeal reviewed and subsequently increased the prison sentence of Perry Chennell, a builder from Chertsey, following a heinous sexual assault that shocked the local community. Originally sentenced to seven years in June of that year, Chennell's punishment was deemed insufficient by the judiciary after an appeal was lodged by the lawyers representing the Attorney General, Dominic Grieve QC.

During the hearing held on a Friday, three senior judges concluded that the initial sentence was 'unduly lenient' given the severity of the crime. As a result, they increased Chennell's incarceration period to 12 years, reflecting the gravity of his actions.

The court detailed the disturbing circumstances surrounding the assault. The victim, who was heavily intoxicated at the time, was described as being 'near comatose' due to alcohol consumption. The assault took place in the back of Chennell's car in Chertsey in October 2012. The prolonged attack left her with injuries described as 'devastating and life-changing,' causing significant physical and psychological trauma.

Lord Justice Treacy explained that Chennell had initially met the woman earlier that evening at a local pub. The two engaged in what appeared to be consensual sexual activity. However, the situation rapidly deteriorated as the woman became so intoxicated that she entered a semi-conscious state. Her next recollection was waking up in excruciating pain, a moment that marked the beginning of her suffering.

The court heard that Chennell inflicted 'quite appalling' internal injuries on his victim. Medical professionals who treated her expressed disbelief at the extent of her injuries. One expert suggested that her injuries were caused by the use of 'enormous blunt force,' possibly with an object such as a bottle. Although the exact weapon used could not be identified, the evidence pointed to a brutal assault involving significant force.
