PAUL THOMPSON FROM STANLEY FACES JAIL OVER CHILD ABUSE AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES IN DURHAM
In a serious case that has shocked the community of Stanley, Paul Thompson, aged 53, is facing imminent imprisonment after admitting to a series of disturbing charges related to child abuse and the possession of indecent images. The allegations against Thompson include a total of 28 counts, encompassing both the creation and distribution of illegal material involving minors. The case was brought before Durham Crown Court, where Thompson made his initial appearance just a day prior to the sentencing hearing. His legal representative, Lewis Kerr, indicated that his client was likely to admit guilt following a case conference. Despite this, Judge Christopher Prince remanded Thompson into custody overnight, emphasizing that he should expect to be sentenced to prison upon his return to court.
During the proceedings, Mr. Kerr requested that the charges be formally put to Thompson. The defendant subsequently pleaded guilty to 15 counts of making indecent images of children, one count of taking such images, and possession of a staggering 4,931 images in total. Additionally, Thompson admitted to nine counts of distributing indecent material involving minors, as well as one count each of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and engaging in sexual activity with a child.
The court was informed that authorities had seized Thompson’s computer equipment during a raid at his residence on September 11 of the previous year. An examination of the digital contents revealed a disturbing array of images, ranging from less severe to highly explicit material involving children. The investigation also uncovered some images depicting humans engaging in sexual acts with animals, further highlighting the severity of the case.
Legal counsel Lewis Kerr raised concerns about potential psychiatric issues affecting Thompson and requested a delay in sentencing to allow for comprehensive reports from mental health professionals and the Probation Service. Judge Prince agreed with this request, stating that Thompson’s guilty plea meant he would receive a custodial sentence. The judge also ordered that Thompson be remanded back into custody until the sentencing date, which was set for May 3.
Judge Prince made it clear that every day Thompson spends in custody now would reduce the total time he would ultimately serve in prison. He emphasized that even if the process of obtaining psychiatric and probation reports took up to six weeks, it would not delay justice. Addressing Thompson directly, the judge warned that the appropriate sentence would be handed down upon his return to court. Furthermore, Thompson’s name will be entered onto the Sexual Offenders’ Register, with the duration of his registration depending on the final sentence imposed.
Thompson is scheduled to be brought back to court for sentencing on Friday, May 3, marking a significant step in the legal process following these grave allegations.
