PAUL SHIELDS FROM FORMBY SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES INVOLVING TWO GIRLS

In October 2021, a man named Paul Shields, aged 45 and residing on Beechwood Drive in Formby, was handed a substantial prison sentence after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences involving two young female victims.

The case was heard at Liverpool Crown Court, where the court found Shields guilty of a total of 22 separate charges related to sexual misconduct committed over a period spanning from 2006 to 2011.

Shields’ crimes included attempted rape, assault by penetration, sexual assault, and causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

The majority of these offences—twenty in total—were committed against one of the girls and occurred over several years, illustrating a pattern of predatory behavior.

The remaining two offences, which involved sexual assault and causing a child to engage in sexual activity, were directed at the second girl.

Despite the gravity of his actions, Shields maintained his innocence throughout the trial, refusing to admit to any wrongdoing, which resulted in the victims having to relive their traumatic experiences by giving evidence in court.

The victims, who had initially kept their ordeal secret, finally disclosed the details of their abuse in 2018, prompting the police investigation that led to Shields’ arrest and subsequent conviction.

The court heard how Shields had threatened the girls to silence them, but their courage in coming forward eventually brought justice.

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones sentenced Shields to 21 years in prison, emphasizing the severity of his crimes and the danger he posed to children.

The judge also ordered Shields to be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life, a measure intended to monitor and restrict his activities following his release.

During the sentencing, Shields appeared visibly shocked by the length of his sentence.

The judge described him as “a danger to children as far as serious sexual harm is concerned” and highlighted that his persistent denial of guilt had caused additional suffering for the victims.

Judge Trevor-Jones pointed out that Shields’ refusal to accept responsibility meant that the victims had to endure the trauma of giving evidence before a jury, which compounded their suffering.

He acknowledged the devastating impact the abuse had on their lives, noting that both victims reported ongoing difficulties trusting others and forming relationships.

The psychological harm inflicted was described as severe, with the victims suffering enduring trauma and describing how their lives had been fundamentally altered by Shields’ actions.
