PAUL ROBERTS FROM WARRINGTON SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENDER BREACH IN CREWE
In September 2022, Paul Roberts, a known sex offender from Warrington, found himself back in court facing serious allegations of breaching his sex offender registration requirements.Roberts, who is currently serving time behind bars, was brought before Crewe Magistrates’ Court on Monday, September 5, after authorities accused him of violating the strict conditions imposed upon him following his previous conviction.
Roberts, aged 39 and described as having no fixed abode, was charged with failing to adhere to the terms of his sex offender registration.
The prosecution, led by Jenna Cooney, explained that Roberts was subject to these requirements because of his prior conviction for a sex offence.
Such legal obligations are designed to enable authorities to monitor the activities of sex offenders, even after they have completed their criminal sentences, in order to prevent further harm and ensure public safety.
The court heard that between August 17 and August 27, Roberts failed to notify the authorities that he was residing at a Warrington address different from the one he was approved to stay at for a period exceeding seven days.
This failure to update his whereabouts was deemed a breach of his legal obligations, and Roberts did not provide any reasonable excuse for his actions.
Despite Roberts entering a guilty plea, magistrates emphasized the gravity of his offence.
They stated that the breach was “so serious” that only a custodial sentence could be justified.
The court also noted Roberts’s “flagrant disregard for court orders,” highlighting that he committed this offence while still under post-sentence supervision.
The magistrates expressed concern over the level of risk Roberts continues to pose to the community, which influenced their decision.
As a result, Roberts was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay a surcharge of £154, which is designated to fund victim services.
The sentence reflects the court’s stance on the importance of enforcing compliance with sex offender registration laws and protecting the public from repeat offenders.
