PAUL RAPSON FROM BATLEY SENT BACK TO JAIL FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND INDECENT PHOTOS

In January 2021, Paul Rapson, a known sex offender from Batley, was once again remanded into custody after authorities uncovered his continued involvement in the possession and creation of indecent images involving children. The case highlights a disturbing pattern of offending that has persisted despite previous convictions and court orders aimed at preventing such behavior.

Rapson, aged 49, was subjected to a lengthy prison sentence at Leeds Crown Court, where the judge emphasized the ongoing threat he poses to children. The court proceedings revealed that Rapson had previously served an extended sentence for sexually abusing a young boy and for taking indecent photographs of unknown children at popular leisure spots such as Alton Towers and Cannon Hall Farm over ten years ago.

Despite these past convictions and the strict court orders imposed upon him, Rapson continued to offend after his release. Authorities detailed how police seized computer equipment from his parents’ residence in Kirkheaton, Huddersfield, in August 2017. An analysis of this equipment uncovered more than 3,000 indecent images of children, with 47 classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of child exploitation material. Additionally, over 100,000 other images were found but were not examined further due to prosecution guidelines.

Following his initial arrest, Rapson was released on bail, but investigations revealed that he persisted in his illegal activities. Further searches of his and his parents’ computers, conducted approximately ten months later, uncovered additional illicit material, including photographs of himself wearing children’s underwear. These findings underscored the ongoing nature of his offending behavior.

Rapson, residing on Cardigan Close in Batley, pleaded guilty to six counts of making indecent photographs of children, one count of possessing prohibited images, and two counts of breaching a sexual harm prevention order. His criminal history is extensive; in 2009, he was sentenced to an extended term totaling ten years for sexually abusing a young boy and downloading over 20,000 indecent images of children from the internet. He also admitted to taking 13 indecent photographs of unknown children in public places.

During sentencing, Judge Simon Phillips QC condemned Rapson’s actions, stating, “This was systematic and sustained breaching of the terms of your sexual offences prevention order. It was offending on a substantial and technologically sophisticated scale.” A probation service report assessed Rapson as posing a significant risk of harm, citing his preoccupation with children as a key concern. Consequently, the judge imposed an eight-year extended prison sentence, requiring Rapson to serve three years in custody followed by five years on licence. The court also mandated that he remain on the sex offender register for life.

In a related case from July 2009, Rapson, then 37, was sentenced to four years in prison for similar offenses, including sexual abuse of a young boy and possession of over 20,000 indecent images. He was also placed under a lifelong sexual offenders protection order, which restricts his activities post-release, and was registered on the sex offenders register for life. His crimes included taking indecent photographs of children and sexually assaulting a minor, with investigations revealing a total of 20,579 images in his possession at that time.

Authorities, including Detective Constable Joel Clayton of the Child and Public Protection Unit, emphasized their commitment to safeguarding children. Clayton stated, “We are fully committed to the safeguarding of children and we will aim to prosecute any individuals who commit offences against the physical, mental or emotional well-being of a child. This investigation has been conducted alongside our partner agencies which have assisted in this successful prosecution.”

The investigation demonstrated the diligent efforts of law enforcement officers, who identified a vulnerable victim through digital evidence and acted swiftly to secure the child's safety. The case underscores the importance of proactive policing and technological vigilance in combating child exploitation. The authorities hope that such cases serve as a warning to others involved in similar criminal activities, reinforcing that offenders will be tracked down and held accountable.
