PAUL POTTER'S SHOCKING VOYEURISM IN PLYMOUTH: LANDLORD'S SECRET CAMERA HORRIFIES FEMALE TENANT

In June 2019, a disturbing case emerged from Plymouth involving a landlord who secretly installed a camera in a bathroom to record a young female tenant without her knowledge.

The incident has shocked the local community and brought to light serious concerns about privacy violations and exploitation.

According to court proceedings, the tenant, a student, was horrified when she discovered the hidden device in the bathroom of the property she rented from Paul Potter, aged 52.

The device was a small, black cylindrical object that had been placed covertly in the bathroom, a space where she expected privacy.

Initially, she noticed the object but did not think much of it.

However, after three to four days, she observed a red blinking light on the device, which prompted her to investigate further.

Upon inspection, she found that the device contained a memory card.

She then connected the card to her laptop and was appalled to find explicit images of herself, including footage of her washing herself and using the toilet.

The young woman described her experience as traumatic, stating in a court statement, “This was a horrible thing to happen to me.” Her sense of betrayal was compounded by the fact that she trusted Potter, who held keys to her room and was supposed to be her landlord.

During the court hearing at Plymouth Crown Court, it was revealed that Potter had pleaded guilty to three counts of voyeurism related to the incident, which took place in September and October of the previous year.

The charges included installing the camera and recording private images of the woman’s genitalia without her consent.

The court heard that Potter’s actions were not only invasive but also deeply violating of her privacy and dignity.

Judge Robert Linford, who presided over the case, decided to adjourn sentencing until the following Friday.

The delay was due to a dispute between the prosecution and defense regarding whether Potter had returned the rent paid in advance by the victim.

The judge emphasized that the decision to release Potter on bail should not be interpreted as a sign of leniency, stating, “Do not take the fact that I am releasing you on bail as any indication of any sentence you may receive.” Prosecutor John-Paul Fitzgibbon explained that the woman had rented a room from Potter and used a shared bathroom.

He detailed how she initially noticed a black cylindrical object but did not suspect it was recording her.

It was only after several days that she saw a red light blinking on the device and discovered the memory card.

Her subsequent investigation revealed the disturbing recordings, which she described as a violation of her trust and privacy.

She expressed her distress, saying, “This was a horrible thing to have happened to me.

I was horrified to find these images.

I trusted him and he had keys to my room.” Although the woman has since moved out of the property, the case also highlighted issues regarding unpaid rent, with the prosecution asserting that Potter had not reimbursed her for the rent she had paid in advance.

Defense lawyer Ali Rafati argued that the rent had been repaid and attempted to provide context for Potter’s actions, stating that the defendant had become depressed following his divorce and had spent many years caring for his mother.

Rafati admitted that Potter’s behavior was foolish and unhealthy, describing it as a moment of poor judgment rather than malicious intent.

The case remains ongoing as the court prepares to deliver its final sentence, with the community awaiting justice for the victim and a reminder of the importance of privacy and safety in rental arrangements.
