PAUL NORTH FROM SHEFFIELD SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST TEENAGE GIRLS
In a case that has shocked the Sheffield community, Paul North, a respected athletics coach, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars following his conviction on multiple serious sex offences involving two teenage girls. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse carried out over a span of two years, during which North exploited his position of trust to commit these heinous acts.
North, who resided in Sheffield and was employed as a school caretaker at Totley Infant and Junior School on Sunnyvale Road, was also ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for life.
Despite denying the allegations, the jury at Sheffield Crown Court found him guilty of several charges.
Specifically, North was convicted of raping one of the girls once and indecently assaulting her on seven occasions.
He was also found guilty of indecently assaulting the second girl.
However, the jury acquitted him of two additional counts of rape and two further indecent assaults, and the judge directed a not guilty verdict on one other rape allegation.
During the trial, it was revealed that North, who was involved with the Hallamshire Harriers athletic team, had taken advantage of his role as a mentor to the girls, neither of whom were pupils at the school where he worked.
The court heard that North had initially helped the first victim through personal problems at home, developing a paternal relationship with her.
Tragically, this trust was betrayed as North exploited his position to commit sexual offences.
The girl, whose identity remains protected by legal restrictions, was subjected to multiple assaults at North’s home within the school grounds, in his car, and during trips organized by the athletic club.
The allegations against North came to light after another teenage girl, also aged 15 and a member of the same athletic club, reported that North had indecently assaulted her.
She recounted to the court that North had taken her to the school during the holiday period for a special assessment aimed at helping her advance into a more senior athletic squad.
During this visit, North subjected her to a series of inappropriate and invasive procedures.
He measured her limbs and chest meticulously, then instructed her to remove her shorts and underwear.
When she hesitated, he removed her sports top himself.
The court heard that North then used baby oil to massage her and committed an indecent assault.
Following the assault, the terrified teenager quickly dressed and was driven home by North.
Overcome with fear, she immediately reported the incident to her father.
She later described feeling shaken and unable to think clearly due to the trauma she experienced.
The court’s verdict underscores the severity of North’s actions and the breach of trust involved in his abuse of vulnerable young girls.
The Sheffield community now grapples with the aftermath of this disturbing case, which highlights the importance of safeguarding and vigilance against those who abuse positions of authority.
