PAUL NEWTON FROM HULL SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL ONLINE
In a case that has shocked the Hull community, Paul Newton, a 46-year-old father of two from Hull, was found guilty of engaging in inappropriate and sexualized communication with a minor via social media.The incident came to light after the teenage girl, who was only 14 at the time, reported the disturbing messages she received from Newton on Facebook.
It all began when Newton reached out to the girl after she agreed to take photographs of his relative, who was participating in a mascot event.
The event was part of a larger celebration, with Newton appealing on Facebook for fans to capture the moment when his relative led the Airlie Birds out for a match at Hull FC during the previous season.
The girl responded positively, indicating her willingness to help by taking pictures.
Newton responded with a casual comment, saying he 'owed her a drink,' which marked the start of their online interaction.
Over the course of four days, the two exchanged messages, during which Newton's tone quickly shifted to one of a sexual nature.
He made inappropriate comments about her appearance, including a remark on her profile picture, where he complimented her body.
Newton then told the girl she was 'every man's dream,' and added that if he woke up with her every morning, he would be a 'happy man.' At this point, the girl made Newton aware of her age, informing him that she would only be 15 on her next birthday.
Newton responded with an apology but then shockingly admitted that he would 'risk it.' He further stated, 'If you ever fancy a fling with an older guy, let me know,' indicating his desire to pursue a sexual relationship despite her age.
Newton continued to message the girl three more times, urging her to meet him in person.
She expressed concern that such meetings could lead to trouble for him, but he persisted.
The messages grew increasingly explicit, with Newton making comments such as, 'I fancy you like f***.' When the girl ceased responding, he sent a final message apologizing, saying, 'I know you’ll probably contact the police.
I’m so sorry.' Following her report, Newton was arrested later that same day.
During his court appearance, he admitted to two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
A third charge of grooming was left on the court record, indicating ongoing concerns about his behavior.
Judge Paul Watson QC addressed Newton directly, stating, 'You should be, and you are, in my view, rightly ashamed of yourself, because it’s not just yourself you have brought disgrace upon, but your family as well.' Newton was sentenced to six months in jail, but the sentence was suspended for 18 months, meaning he would not serve time unless he reoffended within that period.
Additionally, he was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community work and undergo up to 50 days of rehabilitation.
Importantly, he is required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities related to this case.
