LIVERPOOL MAN JAILED FOR 20 YEARS FOR HEINOUS CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES
A 57-year-old man received a 20-year prison sentence for what the court described as “some of the most heinous sexual crimes to appear before the Royal Court.” In June, a trial found Liverpool-born Paul Kelly guilty of eight counts of rape, twelve counts of gross indecency with a minor, seven counts of indecent assault, and one count of serious criminal assault.During the proceedings, Crown Advocate Simon Thomas, representing the prosecution, characterized the crimes as “continuous and frequent sexual abuse over an eight-year period” during which Kelly isolated and groomed his victim.
In a statement read aloud by Crown Advocate Thomas, the victim said: “It will take me a lifetime to heal from what happened.
I am effectively serving a life sentence because of Mr.
Kelly’s actions.
“He robbed me of my childhood.
“He robbed me of my childhood.
“I mourn the loss of my innocence, my adolescence, and my youth.
“The effect on my life has been devastating.” Crown Advocate Thomas stated that the victim endured “severe psychological trauma” as a result of the abuse.
The trauma deeply affected her mental health, and she had once attempted to take her own life.
Kelly’s defense lawyer, Advocate Mark Boothman, stated that Kelly maintains his innocence and plans to appeal the conviction in the Court of Appeal.
Kelly was sentenced to 20 years for each of the 28 charges and will be listed on the Sex Offenders Register for the next 20 years.
