PAUL JOHN ADDICOTT AND REBECCA JEFFREYS SENTENCED IN TAUNTON FOR NEGLECTING CAT

In 2019, Paul John Addicott, born on July 2, 1986, and Rebecca Jeffreys, born on May 8, 1982, both of Massingham Park, Taunton TA2, were convicted of neglecting their pet cat, Snowy. Despite earning a substantial joint income, the couple failed to spend around £5 a month to treat Snowy's painful, untreated skin condition.

They were found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to Snowy, a white cat, by neglecting to seek proper veterinary care. RSPCA Inspector Jo Daniel, who investigated the case, stated: "Sadly Snowy was left to suffer and had painful scabs and sores all over his body, which could have easily been avoided by seeking suitable veterinary care."

Inspector Daniel pointed out the apparent disconnect between the couple’s financial situation and their neglect, noting: "The bench were incredulous that they had failed to get treatment that would have cost approximately £5 a month when they have a significant joint annual income."

She emphasized the responsibility pet owners have, saying: "Pet owners have a responsibility to address any health conditions — animals can’t help themselves and are reliant on their owners to provide the care they need. Anyone who has concerns about the health of their pet should ask for help and advice to avoid unnecessary distress and suffering being caused."

Snowy has since recovered while in the care of the RSPCA West Hatch Animal Centre.

In sentencing, Addicott and Jeffreys each received 80 hours of unpaid work, along with a fine of £385 to cover costs and charges. They were also deprived of ownership of Snowy but were not banned from keeping animals.
