PAUL JENNINGS PLYMOUTH TAXI DRIVER SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR ABUSING GIRL AND DRIVING HER TO SUICIDE ATTEMPTS
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Plymouth, Paul Jennings, a 61-year-old taxi driver from Middlefield Road, Southway, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of a series of heinous crimes involving a young girl. The court heard that Jennings had systematically groomed and abused his victim over a period of eight years, beginning when she was just 13 years old.
The abuse was not only physical and sexual but also deeply psychological, leading the girl to attempt suicide multiple times.
She endured relentless torment, which included being subjected to indecent acts, grooming, and manipulation by Jennings, who often used gifts such as sweets and money to lure her into his trap.
The court was told that Jennings would frequently film himself and the girl during these acts, creating a disturbing collection of indecent images that he kept as a record of his crimes.
Judge Paul Darlow, presiding over the case at Plymouth Crown Court, described the severity and duration of Jennings' offenses.
He stated, “These charges reflect over an eight-year period reflecting systematic abuse.
Photographs were taken and kept by you as record.
It has had a severe psychological impact which no doubt she will have to live with for the rest of her life.” Jennings had previously pleaded guilty to a total of 23 charges, including seven counts of indecent or sexual assault, two counts of indecency with a child, four counts of sexual activity with a child, three counts of engaging a child to engage in sexual activity, six counts of possession of indecent images, and one count of possessing an extreme pornographic image.
The earliest offense was committed in 2001, with the indecent images only discovered upon his arrest last year.
The victim, who reported the abuse to police in July of the previous year, revealed the extent of her suffering.
She disclosed that she began self-harming early in the abuse and had attempted to take her own life multiple times since she was 13.
Her trauma was compounded by her feelings of dirtiness and shame, leading her to scrub herself with bleach in an attempt to cleanse herself of the perceived filth.
Prosecutor Lee Bremridge outlined the disturbing details of Jennings’ grooming tactics, emphasizing how he exploited his position as a taxi driver to give her lifts and offer her money, sometimes as much as £100, to engage in sexual acts.
Bremridge also highlighted that Jennings kept a sickening library of videos, mostly featuring his victim, along with other indecent images downloaded from the internet.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Darlow emphasized the lasting psychological damage inflicted upon the victim, stating that Jennings’ actions had caused harm that she would carry with her for the rest of her life.
Jennings’ crimes serve as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of grooming and sexual abuse, and the court’s decision reflects the gravity of his offenses committed within the community of Plymouth.
