HUSBAND THROTTLED WIFE AND SLASHED AT HER WITH A PUTTY KNIFE

A husband throttled his estranged wife and repeatedly slashed at her with a putty knife, a court heard.

The incident happened after Paul Green turned up at her address.

Nottingham Crown Court heard how she went inside and locked the door on August 24 this year.

But Green knocked on a window and asked her to sign a letter.

When she opened the door, he grabbed her by the throat and pushed her into the kitchen.

Green was confronted by her nephew and he let go and backed away.

Green went into the garden where he said he felt dizzy and unwell.

When his wife went to the garden to pick up her dog, Green grabbed her around the throat and sat on top of her and slashed at her with the knife.

When the nephew attempted to stop Green, he attempted to slash him, the court was told.

After the attack, she had a fractured eye socket, bruising to her right shoulder and scratches to her body, and said in a statement "the attack shocked her".

Green, who was separated from his wife, pleaded guilty at Nottingham Magistrates' Court to assault, causing bodily harm in Clifton, at a hearing in August.

The 53-year-old, who was then of no fixed address, received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, when he appeared at the crown court on December 15.

He will be on an alcohol treatment requirement for nine months and must complete 16 rehabilitation activity days.

A restraining order was imposed for three years banning contact with his wife but Green said: "I don't want to contact my wife".

Judge John Burgess told Green over a virtual link to Nottingham Prison that the attack on his wife "was awful" and was sustained.

He said: "You were armed, you grabbed her by the throat and throttled her, and repeatedly slashed at her with what turned out to be a putty knife." The judge accepted the incident was out of character but "it happened because of your domestic circumstances and drink".

Marie Spenwyn, mitigating, said there had never been a history of violence by him towards his partner.

"What has been of concern more recently has been a suicide attempt and self-harm," she told the judge.

Green has successfully completed a detox from alcohol in prison and is not currently presenting as a risk to himself.

He was living in a tent but there is now accommodation available to him with a long-term friend in Stapleford.
