PAUL GREEN FROM NEWTOWNABBEY SENTENCED AFTER ABUSIVE INCIDENT INVOLVING DOG AND PARTNER
Paul Green, a resident of Shore Road in Newtownabbey, has been convicted of multiple offences following a violent and disturbing incident that took place on May 2, 2024. Green, born on December 11, 1986, and employed as a postman with the Royal Mail, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to an unnamed dog, as well as assaulting his estranged partner and damaging property at her residence. The court proceedings revealed that police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the Merville Garden Village home shared by Green and his partner. Witnesses and the victim provided detailed accounts of Green’s aggressive behavior that morning. According to the prosecution, Green arrived home visibly upset about his pay, and his mood quickly escalated into violence.
Green entered the bedroom where his partner was present and, in a fit of rage, kicked her dog off the bed. The dog was then propelled into the wall, causing it harm. When questioned about his actions, Green admitted to grabbing the dog and declared, “I am sick of this. I am getting rid of it [the dog].”
In a further act of aggression, Green threw the dog into the front passenger seat of his vehicle. His partner attempted to rescue the dog from the car, but Green, who was in the driver’s seat, threatened her, saying, “If you don’t move I will run you over.” Despite her efforts, she managed to retrieve the dog and was walking back to her house when Green confronted her again, threatening, “I am going to punch the head off you.”
Fearing for her safety, the woman locked herself inside her home. Green then proceeded to the back of the property and began kicking the back door. The court also heard that prior to police arriving, Green had threatened to set the house on fire, adding to the severity of his conduct.
Green’s defense lawyer acknowledged that his client had been experiencing “poor mental health,” but noted that he was now on different medication and was making progress. The relationship between Green and his partner, which lasted for 14 years, had since ended.
In sentencing, Green received a four-month custodial sentence, which was suspended for three years. Additionally, he was subject to a restraining order and disqualified from owning or keeping animals for three years, with the ban set to expire in July 2027.
