PAUL GRAHAM CAUGHT IN SOUTH SHIELDS AND BURNOPFIELD FOR SEXUAL CHAT WITH FAKE 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In August 2021, a man from South Shields was apprehended after being caught by paedophile hunters for engaging in inappropriate online conversations with a decoy posing as a 14-year-old girl. The incident unfolded when a woman, who was aware of the situation, exposed Graham after discovering that volunteer groups were actively tracking him down for sending explicit messages to what he believed was a minor.

Paul Graham, aged 39 and residing at Lumley Gardens in Burnopfield, County Durham, had used two separate profiles on the social networking site Chat Hour to communicate with the fake account created by the Child Online Safety Team, a volunteer organization dedicated to combating online child exploitation. Over the course of eight days, Graham sent graphic and sexually explicit messages to what he thought was a teenage girl. He even expressed intentions to travel to her home in South Shields to have sex, suggesting that she should wait until her mother was out so they could meet privately.

During the exchanges, Graham reassured the decoy that he would keep their conversations secret, saying, “I won’t say anything if you won’t.” When the decoy indicated she was too young, Graham attempted to comfort her by replying, “I won’t say anything if you won’t.” The Newcastle Crown Court heard that Graham’s messages quickly escalated into sexually explicit content, raising serious concerns about his intentions.

Once the volunteer group identified Graham through a photograph he uploaded to his social media profile, they made a public appeal on Facebook, seeking to uncover his full identity. The appeal included a picture from his social media account, which ultimately led to his details being handed over to the police. Authorities then tracked him down and confronted him about his online activities.

Graham admitted to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor between April 20 and May 1 of the previous year. During his court hearing, Mr. Recorder Simon Kealey sentenced him to a community order lasting 30 months, which includes requirements for rehabilitation and participation in a sex offender treatment program. Additionally, Graham is mandated to register as a sex offender and must adhere to a sexual harm prevention order for the next five years.

The judge emphasized the seriousness of Graham’s actions, stating, “You used two profiles to contact what you believed to be a 14-year-old girl. It was, in fact, a decoy profile run by a volunteer group. The chats continued for a period of eight days.” He further noted that Graham’s messages became sexually explicit very quickly and that the photograph he uploaded was instrumental in identifying him once it was used by the volunteer group.

Graham, who had no prior convictions, had already deleted the social media app before being tracked down and confronted. His legal representative, Gavin Doig, argued that Graham had voluntarily ceased contact and was experiencing relationship difficulties at the time of the offence. Mr. Doig described Graham’s behaviour as “appalling” but characterized the incident as a serious yet isolated one, implying that it was not part of a pattern of offending.

Overall, the case highlights the ongoing efforts of volunteer groups and law enforcement to combat online child exploitation, as well as the importance of vigilance in protecting minors from predatory behaviour online.
