PAEDOPHILE PAUL GOODEY FROM CHATHAM ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE SEXUAL ABUSE OF 5-YEAR-OLD BOY IN GILLINGHAM

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Chatham and Gillingham, Paul Goodey, a 32-year-old resident of Coppice Road, Chatham, was found guilty of sexually abusing a young boy but has avoided imprisonment.

The incident, which occurred in 2018, involved Goodey assaulting a five-year-old boy during a visit to a friend’s house in Gillingham.

The assault was severe enough that the child sustained a bite mark, which later served as crucial evidence in the case.

According to court reports, Goodey not only attacked the boy but also coerced him into performing a sexual act.

After the incident, he instructed the young victim to keep quiet about what had happened, warning him not to tell anyone.

The child's mother was later informed of the assault when her son confided in her, revealing the details of the abuse and the instructions from Goodey to remain silent.

Medical examinations confirmed the child's account, with doctors discovering a bite mark that matched the child's description of the attack.

The case was brought to the attention of authorities when the mother reported the incident, but legal proceedings faced significant delays.

The police were notified in January 2018, yet charges were not officially authorized until March 2020, leading to criticism over the handling of the case.

During the trial at Maidstone Crown Court, prosecutor Peter Forbes detailed the severity of the offences, emphasizing that Goodey’s actions had left a physical mark on the child.

Despite the gravity of the crimes, Judge Recorder Sarah Elliott QC acknowledged the delays in prosecution and considered Goodey’s learning difficulties in her sentencing decision.

She noted that the defendant could have faced a prison sentence of up to nine years but, due to the procedural delays and his mental health considerations, opted for a different approach.

As part of his sentence, Goodey was handed a three-year community order, which includes 50 days of rehabilitation, mental health treatment, and supervision.

Additionally, he was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a five-year restraining order to protect the victim and prevent further contact.

The court’s decision reflects a complex balance between justice, mental health considerations, and procedural issues, leaving many community members concerned about the adequacy of the punishment for such a serious crime.
