LUTON PAEDOPHILE PAUL FILSELL SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR RAPE OF EIGHT-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a case that has shocked the community of Luton, Paul Filsell, a man residing on Cardiff Road, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 16 years after being found guilty of heinous crimes involving the sexual assault of a young girl. The court proceedings, held at Luton Crown Court, revealed disturbing details about the case, which only came to light several years after the offenses occurred.Judge David Farrell QC, presiding over the case, did not hold back in his condemnation of Filsell, describing him as both a danger to society and a predatory individual. The judge's comments came just weeks after he had handed down comparatively lighter sentences—40 months—to two other men, Roshane Channer and Ruben Monteiro, for raping an 11-year-old girl in a stairwell on Park Street. This juxtaposition highlighted the severity of Filsell’s crimes and the court’s stance on protecting vulnerable children.
The court heard that the sexual assaults committed by Filsell, aged 37 at the time, were only uncovered in 2010. The revelation came after the victim, who was just eight years old at the time of the abuse, attempted to take her own life. She left a heartfelt letter explaining what had happened to her, which was discovered alongside her when she was found. The letter prompted a police investigation that ultimately led to Filsell’s arrest and subsequent charges.
It was revealed during the trial that Filsell had known the girl’s mother and had developed a relationship of trust with the young girl. Over the course of 2004, Filsell subjected her to at least ten separate instances of sexual assault while they were alone together. The court was told that the abuse was systematic and deeply damaging.
Further details emerged that Filsell had a prior conviction from 2006, when he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for grooming and engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl he had contacted via text messaging. This history underscored a pattern of predatory behavior and a disturbing interest in underage individuals.
In delivering his sentence, Judge Farrell emphasized the gravity of Filsell’s actions and the threat he posed to society. He stated, “You are a danger and a predatory paedophile,” making it clear that the defendant’s interests clearly lay in forming relationships with children below the age of consent. As part of his punishment, Filsell will also be required to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities after his release from prison.
