PAUL DEVANEY SENTENCED IN CARLISLE FOR RAPE OFFENSES INVOLVING VICTIMS FROM CARLISLE
In a significant case heard at Carlisle Crown Court, Paul Devaney, a 55-year-old man with no fixed address, was sentenced to a total of eighteen years and six months in prison for his involvement in multiple sexual offenses. The court also ordered Devaney to be placed on the sex offenders register for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the impact on his victims.
Devaney had previously pleaded guilty to three counts of rape during a hearing held on December 7, 2020.
The charges stemmed from two separate incidents involving one woman, with one of these assaults occurring when she was still a child.
Additionally, he was convicted of an incident involving a different woman.
The court heard harrowing details of his actions, which included a particularly disturbing attack where he continued to assault a victim despite her desperate attempts to push him away.
Witnesses described how Devaney left one of his victims sobbing after the assault, showing a blatant lack of remorse.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Devaney had made callous remarks to his victims.
One victim recounted how he later apologized, but then added a flippant comment: “Drink in, wits out,” indicating a disturbing attitude towards his crimes.
The court was told that Devaney exploited his victims’ vulnerability, taking advantage of moments when they were least able to defend themselves.
Both women who testified during the hearing provided powerful impact statements, describing the profound psychological scars left by Devaney’s actions.
One woman expressed feelings of humiliation and dehumanization, stating that he had “stripped me of all my emotions.” She detailed her ongoing struggles with sleep disturbances and waking in terror, revealing that her mental health had been severely affected.
Prosecutor Alison Mather noted that while the victim suggested that her time in prison might bring her some peace, her suffering was undeniable.
The second woman, who was raped twice by Devaney, shared her ongoing battle with nightmares and mental health issues.
She admitted to being “so low” at times that she even attempted to take her own life.
She described her life as “ruined” by Devaney, whom she referred to as a “monster.” Her statement concluded with a poignant remark: “I do not think any sentence the court passes will be as long as the sentence his actions have given me, or impact his life as much as he impacted mine.” Judge [Name], presiding over the case, emphasized the gravity of Devaney’s crimes and the lasting damage inflicted upon his victims.
The sentence reflects the court’s recognition of the need for justice and protection for the community of Carlisle from individuals like Devaney, whose actions have left indelible scars on those they have harmed.
