PAUL DEGENHART'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN SHEFFIELD AND CHESTERFIELD REVEALED
In December 2020, a disturbing case involving decades of child abuse came to light as Sheffield Crown Court sentenced Paul Degenhart to a lengthy prison term for his heinous crimes.Degenhart, who previously resided on Raeburn Road in Sheffield, was convicted of abusing four children over a span of more than two decades, from the 1980s through the early 2000s.
The court heard how he systematically groomed his victims, often introducing them to drugs as part of his manipulative tactics.
One particularly distressing aspect of the case involved Degenhart taking a vulnerable boy from London to Sheffield, where he continued his abuse.
The psychological and physical trauma inflicted on the victims was described as devastating, leaving long-lasting scars.
The court proceedings revealed that Degenhart's criminal activities extended beyond Sheffield, with his move to Cherwell Close in Brimington, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, occurring before his arrest and trial in 2020.
During the trial, which culminated in October 2020, Degenhart, aged 48 at the time, was found guilty of 33 separate offences.
The jury unanimously convicted him of four counts of rape, two of a serious sexual offence, one of attempted rape, 20 counts of indecent assault, and six counts of indecency with a child.
The evidence presented included detailed victim personal statements, which painted a harrowing picture of the impact his abuse had on their lives.
Prosecutor Michael Smith read these statements aloud in court, revealing the profound and lasting damage caused.
One victim described how the abuse led to struggles with drug addiction and multiple incarcerations.
Another victim shared that the trauma affected his relationship with his partner, stating, “Sometimes I scrub myself until I get sore,” illustrating the deep psychological scars.
He also explained that reporting the abuse to police only intensified his mental anguish, leading him to gamble excessively in an attempt to distract himself.
Another victim expressed that the abuse had destroyed his ability to form healthy relationships, claiming, “I have nothing but trouble with relationships...
I believe the abuse has ruined my sex life.
Intimacy is impossible.” He also revealed that he became overprotective of his son, to the point where his partner advised him to report the abuse to police as a way to move forward.
The victim disclosed that he suffers from conditions including ADHD, borderline personality disorder, and depression, which he attributes directly to the abuse.
He has made three suicide attempts, underscoring the severe mental health consequences of Degenhart’s actions.
At sentencing, Degenhart was ordered to serve a custodial term of 31 years, followed by a three-year period on licence.
He was also placed on the sex offenders register for life, although he was not subjected to a sexual harm prevention order.
The defendant appeared in court via a video link from Doncaster prison, where he appeared to take notes on a white envelope as the sentence was read out.
It was also noted that Degenhart had two relevant previous convictions, which added to the severity of his sentencing.
The court emphasized the gravity of his crimes and the lasting impact on his victims, who continue to suffer from the trauma inflicted during their childhoods.
