PAUL COWIE FROM PETERLEE FACES COURT AFTER BRUTAL DOG ABUSE IN COUNTY DURHAM

In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Paul Cowie, a resident of Peterlee, was convicted in 2023 for a heinous act of animal cruelty that took place on October 5, 2022. Cowie, born on February 22, 1966, and residing at 32 Sledmere Close, Peterlee SR8 5JN, was caught on CCTV footage brutally kicking his dog, Benji, a lurcher, a total of fifteen times within just one minute.

The incident occurred along North Road East in Wingate, County Durham, where Cowie was seen repeatedly kicking the defenseless dog. Despite the aggressive assaults, Benji did not retaliate. Instead, the frightened animal cowered and desperately tried to avoid his owner’s violent kicks, clearly showing signs of distress and submission. The footage captured the disturbing scene in stark detail, prompting immediate concern from animal welfare authorities.

Benji’s condition following the attack was assessed by veterinary professionals, who confirmed that the dog exhibited no signs of aggression. Instead, the vet observed that Benji was behaving normally but displayed body language indicative of fear and submission. The veterinarian noted that the dog was trying to avoid the blows, and at one point, when pulled on the lead in an attempt to escape, Cowie used the lead to pull Benji closer. The force of the kicks was so severe that it lifted the dog off its feet, and on one occasion, caused Benji to fall over backwards.

Following the incident, the RSPCA launched an investigation into Cowie’s actions. Inspector Clare Wilson described the case as deeply distressing, emphasizing the cruelty inflicted upon Benji. She stated, “This is a very sad case where a dog suffered because of horrendous physical violence. Dogs experience a range of emotions including fear and anxiety, it is deeply distressing to think of the stress and pain Benji experienced as a consequence of this attack. There is never any excuse for this type of violence and this footage makes very difficult viewing.”

In mitigation, Cowie admitted to causing unnecessary suffering under the Animal Welfare Act. He expressed remorse upon viewing the footage, revealing that he was struggling with alcohol issues at the time of the incident. The court was informed that Cowie was shocked to see himself kicking Benji, which contributed to his conviction.

Benji was initially taken into the care of Stray Aid but is now under the supervision of the RSPCA. Staff members have reported that Benji is friendly and has shown no trouble during his recovery. He is expected to be available for rehoming soon, offering hope for a fresh start after the traumatic ordeal.

Regarding sentencing, Cowie received a 12-month community order, which includes 20 days of rehabilitation activities and a nine-month alcohol treatment order. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £450 in costs and a £115 victim surcharge. The court also imposed a five-year ban on Cowie keeping any animals, along with a deprivation order concerning Benji, which will remain in effect until April 2028. This case highlights the ongoing efforts of authorities to combat animal cruelty and ensure justice for vulnerable animals in County Durham and beyond.
