PAUL BREWSTER SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY IN CALNE

A man from Calne has been formally sentenced after being found responsible for severe animal neglect and cruelty involving a dog seized from his residence. Paul Brewster, aged 38 and residing on Dixon Way, appeared before Swindon Magistrates Court on April 30, where he pleaded guilty to charges related to animal welfare violations.

The case arose after authorities executed a warrant at Brewster’s home on Dixon Way on May 29, 2024. During the search, officers discovered a dog in a deplorable state, suffering from neglect and living in extremely unsanitary conditions. The dog, believed to be a banned breed, was immediately removed from the premises and taken to kennels for urgent medical treatment. Following a thorough assessment, it was determined that the dog did not belong to a banned breed, despite initial concerns.

In court, Brewster was handed a fine of £285, along with an additional surcharge of £114 and an order to pay £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service. The investigation was led by PC Lizzie Wright, who described the case as a particularly egregious example of animal cruelty. She stated, “This was a terrible case of animal cruelty. The dog was found to be living in a kitchen full of rubbish, including its own faeces. It did not have a water bowl, and we could not find any dog food in the house – a clear failure to provide the dog’s most basic needs. Rusty was incredibly malnourished, and its skin was visibly in a bad shape.”

Thanks to the prompt action of the authorities, Rusty, the dog involved, is now on the path to recovery. The animal is expected to be re-homed through a dedicated charity that specializes in rescuing and rehabilitating neglected animals. PC Wright emphasized the importance of community vigilance, urging anyone who suspects animal abuse—whether through physical violence, neglect, or other forms of cruelty—to report it to the RSPCA. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for public awareness and intervention to protect vulnerable animals from harm.
