PAUL BILAN FROM KIRKCALDY SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL KNIFE AND SCREWDRIVER ATTACK IN GLENROTHES

A man identified as Paul Bilan, aged 35 and hailing from Kirkcaldy, has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison following a severe domestic assault that involved the use of a knife and a screwdriver. The incident took place in Glenrothes, where Bilan attacked his new partner after a night of heavy drinking.

According to reports presented at the town’s sheriff court, the disturbance was first noticed around midnight on May 1 of the previous year. Neighbors or witnesses heard loud noises emanating from a property on Altyre Avenue in Glenrothes. A male voice was heard shouting “F*** off,” with the tone indicating anger and intoxication. Witnesses described the shouting as lasting approximately five minutes, creating a tense and alarming atmosphere in the neighborhood.

Shortly after 1:25 am, a further disturbance was reported when screams were heard from inside the same property. A male voice was heard asking, “Do you want me to hit you even more?” This escalation prompted police officers to respond to the scene shortly after 2 am. Upon arrival, the officers encountered Bilan’s female partner, who was visibly injured with a swollen face and bruising.

The victim recounted to police that Bilan had inflicted injuries using a knife and had pushed a screwdriver into her ear. An examination revealed a long laceration behind her left ear, so severe that the officer could see through her ear. The injuries indicated a brutal attack, with the woman suffering both cuts and physical assault.

At the time of the incident, Bilan was an inmate at Perth Prison. He subsequently pleaded guilty to charges of assault causing severe injury and permanent disfigurement. The court heard that Bilan had kicked the woman, attempted to pull her arms away from her face, and repeatedly tried to strike her with a knife. He also admitted to striking her ear with the knife and pushing a screwdriver into her ear, actions that caused significant harm.

During the court proceedings, Bilan’s solicitor, David Cranston, acknowledged the seriousness of the offense, stating, “I can’t put any sort of gloss on what happened.” The sheriff, Robert More, sentenced Bilan to 32 months in prison, with the sentence being backdated to May 2 of the previous year. Additionally, a non-harassment order was imposed, prohibiting Bilan from contacting the victim for a period of ten years. Sheriff More emphasized the severity of the attack, remarking, “This must have been utterly terrifying for the complainer.”

It is noteworthy that Bilan has a history of violent behavior; in 2021, he was jailed for three years after attacking his partner when she discovered messages he had sent to an ex-girlfriend. This pattern of violence underscores the ongoing risk he poses to those around him.
