PAUL ATKIN SENTENCED IN SOUTH SHIELDS FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES AGAINST TEENAGE GIRL

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of South Shields, Paul Atkin, a member of the Jehovah’s Witness congregation, was convicted of serious sexual misconduct involving a teenage girl. The incident, which took place in South Shields, has highlighted issues surrounding church cooperation with law enforcement and the devastating impact on the victim.

Back in February 2015, the case came to light when allegations of sexual assault surfaced against Atkin, who was then 15 and a half years old at the time of the incident. Despite the church’s internal investigation, which resulted in Atkin being disfellowshipped, the church officials refused to cooperate with police authorities when they sought further information. The church cited confidentiality as the reason for withholding any statements or records from law enforcement, despite the seriousness of the allegations.

Prosecutor Deborah Smith addressed the court, explaining that the church’s internal investigation had led to Atkin’s removal from the congregation, but no official documentation or minutes of meetings with church elders had been disclosed to police. She emphasized that the church’s stance hindered the investigation, which could have provided crucial evidence. The initial charge of rape was dropped after Atkin admitted to engaging in sexual activity with the girl, who was 15 and a half at the time. The court was told that the girl did not wish to have sex with Atkin, but he believed she consented, a belief that the court found to be unreasonable.

The victim, now an adult, provided a statement that was read aloud in court, revealing the profound and lasting effects of the ordeal. She explained that her confidence had been shattered, and she struggled with trust issues towards men. She recounted how she had bottled up her feelings, turning to alcohol and drugs during her teenage years. Her statement expressed a desire for justice, stating, “I hope he gets sent to prison and gets what he deserves.”

Judge Simon Hickey sentenced Atkin to five years in prison. Additionally, he ordered Atkin to register as a sex offender for life and to comply with a sexual offences prevention order for five years. The judge remarked on the significant impact the crime had on the victim, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense.

Gavin Doig, representing Atkin, highlighted that his client had a supportive family and partner, describing him as a hardworking man with a stable job. He argued that Atkin had taken responsibility for his actions, noting that it was he who had initially reported the matter to the police. Mr. Doig expressed remorse on behalf of his client, stating that Atkin deeply regretted the offense, especially given that the victim was underage at the time.

Following the sentencing, the victim shared her feelings, revealing her long-standing pain and disappointment. She recounted how, years earlier, she had confided in someone about the abuse, only to be told it would be handled by the church fellowship, which she felt was inadequate. Her courage to reach out again was sparked by seeing Atkin on Facebook, prompting her to seek an apology. This led to police involvement and her decision to give a formal statement.

She concluded by expressing relief at the sentence, saying, “It was just a huge relief that he was finally going to get what he deserved. The police have been really supportive. It just feels as if I can now finally move on with my life.” The case has underscored the importance of cooperation between religious institutions and law enforcement in safeguarding vulnerable individuals and ensuring justice is served.
