BEDWORTH MAN PAUL ADLARD SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL AND BOY
In April 2012, Paul Adlard, a 65-year-old man from Bedworth, was sentenced to a total of five years in prison for sexually abusing a young girl and groping a boy.Adlard, of Beechwood Road, had denied the allegations, including indecently assaulting the girl in the 1980s when she was approximately nine years old, as well as four more recent charges of indecent and sexual assault against a boy aged 11 to 13.
Following a trial held in November of the previous year, Adlard was found guilty. Since then, pre-sentence and psychiatric reports have been prepared for his sentencing.
Judge Amjad Nawaz, sentencing Adlard, ordered him to register as a sex offender for life and issued a sexual offences prevention order that prohibits him from having unsupervised contact with children.
During the proceedings, defence lawyer John Brotherton stated that Adlard now accepted the jury’s verdicts.
In addressing the defendant, Judge Nawaz remarked, “These unfortunate children were used by you as an object of your desire, and your offending has had a life-long effect on them.
“Giving evidence in your trial has meant the memories have come back and they are all raw again.
“You told (the girl) to be quiet and not to tell anyone. She did not do so because she felt she was to blame for what was happening to her.
“That is a terrible, terrible consequence of your actions, and she did not say anything for many years.”
The case was initiated after the summer of 2009 when the young boy made a complaint that Adlard had been touching him indecently. The boy recounted that, on numerous occasions from when he was 11, Adlard would grab his groin when they were alone.
Police investigations extended to trace other individuals who had contact with Adlard during their youth. This led to uncovering a woman who stated that he had sexually abused her in the 1980s.
Throughout the trial, Adlard maintained his innocence, denying any sexual contact with the children and alleging that they had conspired to fabricate allegations against him.
