BALLYCASTLE GAA REFEREE PATRICK MCQUILLAN SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN CO ANTRIM

In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Ballycastle and the wider Co Antrim area, Patrick McQuillan, a well-known GAA referee and scout master, was sentenced on Wednesday to a total of eleven years in prison for a series of child sex abuse offenses spanning nearly two decades. The court heard that McQuillan, a father of four, had exploited his trusted positions within the community—serving as a scout leader, a member of St John’s Ambulance, and a part-time fireman—to carry out his heinous acts against six young victims.

Judge Gordon Kerr QC, presiding over the case at Antrim Crown Court, emphasized the gravity of McQuillan’s misconduct. He explained that the consecutive sentences were necessary to reflect the full extent of the offending, which involved a sustained pattern of sexual abuse over a significant period, beginning in the early 1980s and continuing until March 2000. The judge described the case as one involving a mature man abusing his position of trust, a breach of moral and social boundaries that he characterized as a gross violation.

Addressing McQuillan directly, Judge Kerr stated, “This is a serious case involving the abuse and corruption of young children by a mature man who stood in a position of trust. That breach is a gross breach, and your abusive behavior continued for nearly 20 years. You took advantage not only of your family but also of your social contacts with children to satisfy your illegal desires.”

McQuillan, aged 62 and residing on Moyle Avenue in Ballycastle, was convicted last month of 38 separate offenses. These ranged from indecent assault and gross indecency to the attempted buggery of two of his victims. The court revealed that he exploited his roles—particularly as a scout master and a member of St John’s Ambulance—to abuse the young boys under his care.

Throughout the proceedings, the judge highlighted the psychological and emotional harm inflicted upon the victims. He noted that each victim had been left with ‘adjustment disorders’ and that the abuse had a damaging and lasting impact on their lives. Despite the severity of the crimes, McQuillan refused to acknowledge the reality of his actions, a stance that the court found to be indicative of his resolute denial.

Details of the abuse revealed that McQuillan often initiated contact by touching victims over their clothing, gradually escalating to more invasive acts. One victim, known to the court, recounted that McQuillan, who knew him through scouting activities, indecently assaulted him under the guise of teaching him to swim. In other instances, he used demonstrations involving St John’s Ambulance equipment or pretended to show how to stop bleeding as a pretext for abuse. There was also an incident at the local fire station where he sexually assaulted a victim.

Initially, McQuillan faced a total of 51 charges involving seven different complaints. The jury, composed of seven men and five women, deliberated for over six hours across two days. They acquitted him of one charge involving indecent assault on a girl and failed to reach verdicts on two other counts, leaving those charges unresolved. Ultimately, the jury convicted him of sexually abusing all six male victims, ranging in age from childhood to their teenage years. The court also cleared him of ten other charges involving five victims and discharged the jury from deciding on one additional count.

During the sentencing, McQuillan’s defense lawyer, Brian McCartney QC, highlighted his client’s previously clean criminal record and emphasized that there was no evidence of violence, threats, or coercion in the abuse. He argued that the convictions tarnished McQuillan’s otherwise impeccable character and expressed concern about the hardship that imprisonment would impose, given his age and health.

In addition to the prison sentence, Judge Kerr ordered McQuillan to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, prohibited him from working with children or vulnerable adults, and imposed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for the next 15 years. The judge underscored the profound and lasting damage caused to the victims, many of whom continue to suffer from the effects of the abuse. The court’s findings reinforced the view that there was no mitigation for McQuillan’s actions, and he remains resolute in his denial of guilt.

Community members and victims alike have expressed their outrage and sorrow over the case. One victim, who chose to remain anonymous, spoke about the importance of coming forward, describing his decision to report the abuse as “the best decision I have ever made in my life.” He urged other victims to do the same, emphasizing that their stories deserve justice. The case has left a lasting scar on Ballycastle, a town known for its close-knit community and scenic seaside setting, now overshadowed by the dark revelations of betrayal by someone they once trusted.
