PATRICK CONLAN SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENDER FROM NOTTINGHAM AND DERBY
In a disturbing case that spans over three decades, Patrick Conlan, a man with a long history of child sex offenses, has been brought back into the spotlight following revelations of abuse that occurred in Derby when he was a juvenile. The Derby Crown Court heard harrowing details of how Conlan, then under 16, subjected a young girl from Derby to sexual abuse more than 35 years ago, in a case that highlights the persistent issues surrounding child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement.
According to court proceedings, the abuse took place at a residence in Derby, where Conlan engaged in inappropriate sexual touching of the young girl and forced her to perform sexual acts on him.
The victim, who was also under 16 at the time, endured threats from Conlan, who warned her that unless she complied, he would have full intercourse with her.
These acts of coercion and abuse left a lasting impact on her, yet she chose to remain silent for many years.
The court was informed that the woman only disclosed her ordeal to her sister in 2000, after Conlan had already been convicted of gross indecency with a different underage girl.
Despite this disclosure, she kept her own experience secret until 2016, when she finally reported the abuse to the police.
This delayed reporting underscores the often-hidden nature of childhood abuse and the importance of encouraging victims to come forward.
Patrick Conlan, who resides on Ebers Road in Sherwood, Nottingham, has a criminal record that includes multiple convictions related to child sexual offenses.
The court detailed his previous sentences, including a two-year prison term in 2000 for indecent assault on a girl under 14 and gross indecency with a child, which also resulted in his being placed on the sex offender register for ten years.
Further convictions include a 30-month sentence in May 2004 for indecent assault of a child, a 33-month sentence in September 2008 for sexual activity with a minor, and a 14-month consecutive term in November 2008 for producing indecent images of a child.
In the current case, Conlan pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of a child, acknowledging his misconduct.
The prosecution, led by Jonathan Straw, emphasized that the offenses occurred over 35 years ago, with both the victim and Conlan being under 16 at the time.
The victim recounted how Conlan sexually touched her and forced her to perform acts, threatening her with full intercourse if she refused.
Mr.
Straw explained that over the years, the victim made various disclosures about her abuse.
She confided in her sister in 2000, after Conlan's earlier conviction, and later disclosed her own experiences in 2016, prompting her to report the matter to the police.
Conlan was arrested in February 2017 and initially denied the allegations, but eventually pleaded guilty to the charges.
During the sentencing, Judge Shaun Smith QC acknowledged Conlan’s extensive criminal history and the nature of his offenses.
He sentenced Conlan to a three-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, noting that this was the maximum sentence available at the time of the original offenses due to Conlan’s age.
The judge emphasized that this sentence does not diminish the severity of the crimes but reflects the legal limitations of the period.
Judge Smith also assured the public that authorities continue to monitor Conlan’s activities to prevent any further offenses.
He highlighted that Conlan has not committed any crimes since his last conviction in 2008 and has completed all rehabilitation programs assigned to him.
The judge stated, “Everyone is agreed, the prosecution, the defense, and myself, that if you were being dealt with back then, the court would not have been able to send you to custody for any longer than three months because of your age at that time.” Conlan’s legal history demonstrates a pattern of disturbing behavior, with previous sentences including a 30-month term for indecent assault and a 33-month sentence for sexual activity with a minor, alongside a conviction for producing indecent images.
His defense attorney, Michael Cranmer-Brown, argued that Conlan has shown commitment to rehabilitation, having completed all relevant programs and maintained good conduct since his last conviction in 2008.
This case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by victims of childhood sexual abuse and the importance of persistent law enforcement efforts to bring offenders to justice, regardless of how much time has passed since the offenses occurred.
