OWEN SMITH FROM SHEFFIELD SENTENCED TO 19 YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST TEENAGERS
A man from Sheffield, Owen Smith, aged 50, has been handed down a lengthy prison sentence of 19 years following a series of serious sexual offences committed against three teenage girls. The conviction came after multiple victims bravely faced him in court, providing detailed accounts of the abuse they endured.
Smith's crimes spanned several years, with one of the most disturbing incidents involving the rape of a girl when she was only 12 years old during the 1990s.
The court heard that Smith, who was employed as a mental health worker at the time, exploited his professional position to manipulate and groom vulnerable teenagers.
His method of grooming was reportedly facilitated through the use of alcohol and drugs, which he used to weaken the victims' resistance and gain their trust.
Judge Sarah Wright presided over the case and acknowledged the courage demonstrated by the victims in coming forward and sharing their traumatic experiences.
Recognizing the severity of Smith's offences, the judge also imposed an additional year on license, specifically due to the offence involving a girl under the age of 13.
This means that Smith will be subject to a parole assessment halfway through his sentence, allowing authorities to evaluate his progress and risk to the public.
Throughout the trial, the court was presented with compelling evidence of Smith’s predatory behavior and abuse of power.
The sentencing reflects the gravity of his actions and the impact on the victims’ lives.
The case has drawn significant attention in Sheffield, highlighting the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse and the need for vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
