OWAIN JONES FROM DEGANWY SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IMAGES IN CAERNARFON

In March 2020, Owain Jones, a resident of Deganwy, was sentenced to a three-year prison term after being found guilty of possessing and distributing child sexual abuse images. Jones, aged 34 and residing on Vardre Avenue, had previously taken steps to conceal his identity by changing his name, likely in an attempt to hide his disturbing past. Despite these efforts, his illicit activities came to light once again, revealing a deeply troubling pattern of behavior.

Authorities uncovered a significant collection of illegal images on Jones’s devices, including a particularly heinous video depicting a six-month-old infant being subjected to horrific acts of torture. The police recovered a total of 516 indecent images, some of which were described in court as being of a particularly disturbing nature, not even cataloged in the police database. This extensive collection underscored the severity of his offenses and the depravity involved.

During the court proceedings at Caernarfon Crown Court, prosecutor Sion ap Mihangel stated that Jones had admitted to being sexually aroused by indecent images of children, further emphasizing the gravity of his crimes. It was also revealed that Jones had a prior conviction in 2007, when he received a suspended sentence for similar offenses involving indecent images, indicating a troubling pattern of behavior over the years.

Jones’s defense lawyer, Jo Maxwell, argued that his client had made efforts to reform, including changing his name and seeking help for his problematic behavior. However, the court was presented with evidence of the full extent of his depravity, including police seizure of his computer equipment in April 2018. During this investigation, officers discovered images of child abuse described in court as “hideous” in detail, illustrating the disturbing nature of his actions.

In response to these findings, Judge Timothy Petts imposed a ten-year sexual harm prevention order on Jones, which requires him to register as a sex offender indefinitely. The judge’s decision reflects the serious concern over the potential risk Jones poses to the community and the need for ongoing monitoring to prevent further offenses.
