OSMAN MOHAMED FROM CARDIFF CAUGHT IN BARGOED SEXUAL ASSAULT SCANDAL
In a disturbing incident that has left the local community shaken, Osman Mohamed, a 36-year-old man from Cardiff, was convicted of serious sexual offenses against a teenage girl in the Bargoed area of Caerphilly.The events unfolded on the summer bank holiday of 2021, specifically on Monday, August 30, and have since garnered significant attention from law enforcement and the public alike.
According to court proceedings, Mohamed approached a 15-year-old schoolgirl in Bargoed after traveling there from Cardiff by train.
He engaged her in conversation and falsely claimed to be her age, attempting to establish a false sense of familiarity.
During this encounter, Mohamed made inappropriate advances, including touching her on the bottom over her clothing, after consuming alcohol that impaired his judgment.
The victim, who was accompanied by a friend at the time, was approached by Mohamed in a manner that caused her considerable distress and fear.
Prosecutor Christopher Evans detailed that Mohamed's actions included telling the girl he intended to have sex with her and instructing her to meet him near a Morrisons supermarket.
The girl, feeling unsafe and alarmed, reported that Mohamed hugged her and made sexual contact, despite her clearly stating her age.
She quickly realized that Mohamed was much older than he claimed and was not truthful about his age.
The police were called shortly after the incident, and Mohamed was detained in Bargoed.
During the trial, Mohamed denied the charges, maintaining his innocence and claiming he was not responsible for the offenses.
However, the jury found him guilty of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity and of sexual assault.
Mohamed's defense lawyer, Harry Baker, requested that any prison sentence be as brief as possible, citing his client’s previous conviction for drink driving and his current circumstances.
At Cardiff Crown Court, Recorder Caroline Rees KC sentenced Mohamed to 15 months in prison.
The judge emphasized that Mohamed had been intoxicated at the time of the offense, which the victim clearly perceived.
She noted that Mohamed approached the girl, hugged her, and touched her inappropriately, despite her protests and her assertion that she was only 15.
The court heard that Mohamed's denial of responsibility demonstrated a lack of remorse and insight into his actions.
Mohamed, who was assisted by an Arabic translator during the proceedings, will serve half of his sentence in custody.
Any time spent in detention will count towards his overall sentence.
Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
The court also informed Mohamed that he faces the possibility of deportation from the United Kingdom, given the nature of his offenses and his immigration status.
The case has left the local community in Cardiff and Caerphilly concerned about safety and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals from predatory behavior.
