STUDENT OSKAR MAJHI FROM PLYMOUTH AVOIDS JAIL OVER CHILD INDECENCY IMAGES
In August 2007, a student who was convicted of downloading indecent images and videos of children was not sentenced to prison. Oskar Joseph Majhi, 20, of Race Hill in Launceston, appeared before Plymouth Crown Court with Judge Paul Darlow QC presiding.Majhi had denied nine counts of making indecent images of children and one additional count of possessing such images. During the court hearing, Majhi was visibly distressed, sobbing as the prosecution detailed that 460 illegal and indecent photographs and videos had been discovered on his computer’s hard drive.
At his trial last month, he claimed that other individuals at his student accommodation in Plymouth must have been responsible for downloading the images. Nonetheless, the jury convicted him on all ten charges.
The police investigation was triggered after a bomb hoax email was sent to the FBI in 2006, leading to a raid on his residence in North Road West, Plymouth. During the search, officers also found class A drugs and two cannabis plants. Following his conviction, Majhi was suspended from his course at Plymouth College of Art and Design.
The images discovered ranged in level of indecency, with some of the most recent videos classified as level 5—signifying the highest degree of indecency, which included depictions of sadism and rape involving young children.
