HORRIFIC CRUELTY IN HULL: ORSOLYA REPASI AND TAMAS NEMET SENTENCED FOR BABY'S SEVERE INJURIES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Hull, a couple identified as Orsolya Repasi, aged 26, and Tamas Nemet, aged 34, have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after being found guilty of inflicting severe injuries on their three-month-old infant. The case, which unfolded in June 2018, revealed a pattern of deliberate physical abuse that left the young child with multiple fractures and injuries, sparking outrage and sorrow among those following the proceedings.
According to court reports, the infant was brought to medical attention after exhibiting signs of distress, notably a limp in his left arm.
Upon examination, doctors discovered a series of grave injuries, including a broken arm, a fractured rib, a broken left thigh, and a fractured left shin.
These injuries were not accidental but were inflicted through acts of cruelty that would have caused the baby intense pain, to the point of screaming out in agony.
The injuries were so severe that they required detailed medical investigation to determine their cause.
Both defendants, who are originally from Hungary, denied any involvement in the injuries and instead blamed each other during the trial.
The mother, Orsolya Repasi, claimed she was unaware of her partner's previous convictions, while Nemet, who had a prior conviction from 2006 for harming a baby girl, maintained his innocence.
The previous conviction involved injuries such as a fractured skull, broken ribs, and black eyes, and resulted in a suspended sentence for endangering a child and causing grievous bodily harm through negligence.
The court noted with particular concern that Nemet had a history of similar offenses, a fact that added weight to the case against him.
During the nine-day trial at Hull Crown Court, the jury heard detailed medical evidence indicating that each injury was caused by excessive force.
The spiral fracture of the baby's arm was attributed to twisting, possibly when the child was yanked or pulled roughly, while the rib injury was linked to squeezing the child's chest so tightly that the ribs nearly touched the backbone.
The severity of these injuries suggested deliberate acts of violence, with each causing the infant excruciating pain and distress, lasting for extended periods.
Despite the gravity of the case, both defendants appeared outside court smiling and laughing, showing no remorse or emotional response when the verdicts were announced.
The jury convicted them of causing or allowing serious physical harm to a child, though it remains unclear which of them directly caused each injury.
The judge, David Tremberg, expressed his dismay at their lack of remorse, emphasizing that unlike some cruelty cases involving individuals with cognitive impairments or youth, both defendants demonstrated articulate, devious, and dishonest behavior, with a clear intent to avoid responsibility.
The court heard that the injuries inflicted on the baby would have caused immediate and intense pain, with the child likely screaming and being extremely distressed for up to half an hour.
The medical evidence was unchallenged in establishing that each injury required the use of excessive force, and both defendants knew that their actions had caused suffering but failed to intervene or stop the abuse.
In her testimony, Repasi expressed her desire to be a mother, but the court noted her continued lack of understanding of her child's needs even after the injuries were discovered.
The couple's relationship had since ended, but their actions left a lasting scar on the community and the child's life.
Tamas Nemet was sentenced to three years and six months in prison, while Orsolya Repasi received a three-year sentence, reflecting the severity of their crimes and the impact on the vulnerable infant they were supposed to protect.
