ONUR KALAN FROM CLAPTON SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG LEFT TO SUFFER IN HIS OWN EXCREMENT

Onur Kalan, a known resident of Southwold Road in Clapton, London E5 9PT, was at the center of a heartbreaking case involving severe neglect and cruelty towards his pet dog. The incident came to light when authorities discovered the condition of Kalan’s elderly bull mastiff, named Tiger, which was found in a deplorable state of suffering.

According to reports, Tiger was left to languish in his own waste, suffering from advanced health issues including heart disease and cataracts. The dog was so neglected that he was blind, crippled, and unable to move properly. The discovery was made by RSPCA inspectors who responded to the scene after Kalan’s arrest on unrelated drug charges. The inspectors found the dog in a courtyard behind Kalan’s residence, which was in a shocking state of filth. The area was divided into three sections, with one containing a kennel that was covered in moss and green foam, and strewn with faeces and a bright yellow liquid, which was either vomit or excrement.

Inside the kennel, two dirty bowls were found, indicating a long period of neglect. Tiger was visibly distressed, trembling and with his tail down. His eyes were clouded with cataracts, yet he still responded to human contact. Despite this, he struggled to get up and down stairs, highlighting his physical deterioration. The dog was transported to the kennels at Islington Police Station, where he was treated for his heart condition and arthritis. Unfortunately, his health continued to decline, and he was only able to eat small amounts of food. His breathing became laboured, and after a period of treatment without improvement, the decision was made to euthanize him to end his suffering.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Kalan had previously sought advice from his Imam about the fate of his dog. The Imam reportedly told him it was permissible to kill the animal, but Kalan lacked the courage to do so himself. Instead, he asked his brother to euthanize Tiger. Defense lawyer Georgia Lascombe explained that Kalan was battling long-term drug and alcohol addiction at the time and was emotionally distressed. She emphasized that he had a strong attachment to the dog and was seeking religious guidance.

Prosecutor Sarah Gabay described the scene at Kalan’s residence, emphasizing the neglect and suffering endured by Tiger. Kalan, who was already serving a 43-month sentence for drug dealing, was sentenced to an additional 12 weeks in prison for animal cruelty. Furthermore, he was banned from owning animals for life, with the court stating that he could not appeal this ban for ten years. The case drew significant attention to the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect and cruelty in the London area.
