The investigation into these crimes began last year, following the brutal assault on Complainant One in December 2012, when she was just 13 years old.
The police investigation revealed that a group of young men had gathered at a Premier Inn in Bristol, where a 22-year-old drug dealer known as Said Zakaria, or his street name Target, was responsible for recruiting girls for parties.
Zakaria arranged to pick up the 13-year-old girl, who can only be identified as Complainant One, and took her to an inner-city flat before bringing her to the hotel.
There, she was raped multiple times by Zakaria and other men, with one stranger also assaulting her.
Complainant One had been groomed since the age of 11 by Mohamed Jumale, a friend of Zakaria.
She was coerced into having sex with multiple men, with Jumale claiming it was part of his cultural practices.
The police investigation uncovered that other teenagers had also been abused in various locations, including flats, parks, and shopping centre toilets.
In January of the following year, a 16-year-old girl, identified only as Victim A, was placed in a Bristol flat by a local authority.
She was described as fearful of the dark and in need of companionship.
Despite her vulnerability, she was left with minimal supervision, often alone for up to 22 hours a day.
She soon encountered Zakaria, who introduced her to a drug gang operating from her flat.
Over the subsequent months, the gang used the property as a base for drug trafficking and also began to sexually exploit her.
A gang member acted as her pimp, guarding her as she engaged in sex work, earning up to 300 pounds a day from multiple clients.
Victim A developed a complex emotional attachment to some of her abusers, a phenomenon likened to a kidnapping victim falling for her captors.
She expressed feelings of satisfaction in pleasing the men and felt a sense of belonging.
Tragically, her 14-year-old sister, also in care and having run away, was raped at the same flat in May last year.
Police arrived at the scene, hearing knocking from a cupboard under the sink, where the girl was found crying and dressed only in her underwear.
She later recounted that her abusers forced her to engage in sexual acts, saying, “They made me do stuff.” This case has cast a long shadow over Bristol, prompting urgent discussions about safeguarding and community safety.
