OMAR ALAM BREACHES SEX OFFENDERS' REGISTER IN OLDHAM - SENTENCING AT MANCHESTER CROWN COURT
In August 2021, a serious breach of the conditions set for a convicted sex offender occurred in Oldham, highlighting ongoing concerns about compliance and public safety.Omar Alam, a 50-year-old man, was found to have failed to adhere to the strict notification requirements mandated by the Sex Offenders’ Register during a specific incident in January of that year.
Under the law, individuals convicted of sexual offences are required to regularly update authorities about any significant changes in their circumstances, such as a change of address or other relevant personal details.
These measures are put in place to ensure public safety and enable law enforcement agencies to monitor offenders effectively.
However, Alam was accused of neglecting these obligations on a particular date in January, which constitutes a breach of the terms of his supervision.
The case was brought before the Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court, where it was proved against Alam in his absence.
Despite his absence, the court found sufficient evidence to confirm that he had failed to comply with the notification requirements.
Alam’s failure to update his details as required by law raises concerns about the effectiveness of supervision and the potential risks posed to the community.
At the time of the proceedings, Alam was detained at HMP Forest Bank, a prison facility.
His case has now been transferred to the Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, where he is scheduled to face sentencing later this month.
The outcome of this hearing will determine the penalties he faces for his breach of the Sex Offenders’ Register and will serve as a reminder of the importance of compliance with legal obligations for convicted offenders.
