OLIVER HELLIWELL CAUGHT WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN STOWMARKET AVOIDS JAIL
In August 2019, a 21-year-old man from Stowmarket, identified as Oliver Helliwell, was found to be in possession of a significant collection of indecent images of children, yet he narrowly avoided imprisonment. The police investigation revealed that Helliwell had stored more than 170 illicit images across multiple devices at his residence on Onehouse Road, highlighting the severity of his offenses.Specifically, authorities uncovered 32 of the most severe images classified as Category A, which depict the most explicit and harmful content. In addition, there were 72 images categorized as B and 70 as C, indicating a range of severity but all contributing to the seriousness of the case. Beyond the still images, Helliwell was also found to possess an extreme pornographic video, further compounding the criminal nature of his activities. This evidence was presented during a hearing at Ipswich Crown Court on a Monday.
The investigation was initiated after the National Crime Agency (NCA) intercepted multiple email addresses associated with uploading indecent images of children. Following this, police officers visited Helliwell’s home on November 7 of the previous year. During the search, they seized several electronic devices, including a laptop, a hard drive, a USB stick, and a mobile phone. Subsequent forensic analysis of these devices revealed the presence of the illicit images and video.
It was also noted that Helliwell had downloaded internet history masking software, although there was no evidence to suggest that he had actively used it to conceal his activities. Initially, Helliwell denied three charges of making indecent images of children and a charge of possessing an extreme pornographic image. However, he later pleaded guilty to these charges during proceedings at Suffolk Magistrates’ Court earlier in the year.
During sentencing, Judge Rupert Overbury addressed Helliwell directly, commenting on his apparent lack of direction in life. The judge stated, “You are someone who has very little going on in their life. You’ve never worked since you left school, and you’re now 21, receiving benefits and living with your grandparents. You don’t seem to do much with your life. The fact is, you are 21 and should have an idea of what you should or should not be doing.”
As part of his sentence, Helliwell was given eight months in prison, but this was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offense within that period. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community work and participate in a 30-day rehabilitation program aimed at addressing his behavior. Furthermore, he was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years, restricting his access to certain online content and activities.
Judge Overbury issued a stern warning, emphasizing the gravity of the offense: “If you ever look at this type of material again, you will find yourself behind bars.” The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, and the serious consequences faced by those caught engaging in such criminal activities.
