NORBERT NAGY ARRESTED IN LISBURN AFTER ONLINE SEXUAL PREDATION PLOT GONE WRONG

In April 2021, a disturbing case unfolded involving Norbert Nagy, a 31-year-old man from Lisburn, who found himself on the wrong side of the law after engaging in inappropriate online communications with a decoy posing as a minor. The incident began when Nagy, who resides on Lawnmount Crescent in Lisburn, initiated contact with a fake profile created by a paedophile hunter group. The group had set up a fake account on a dating application, aiming to catch individuals attempting to engage in sexual activities with minors.

During the online exchange, Nagy believed he was speaking to a 14-year-old boy. The decoy, acting as a minor, asked Nagy if he was comfortable with the age, to which Nagy responded affirmatively. He also complimented the decoy’s profile picture, describing it as “cute,” and proceeded to send sexually suggestive images of himself. The conversation quickly escalated, with Nagy providing his home address and even sending a map of the local area, indicating a desire to meet in person.

However, Nagy’s suspicions were raised when the decoy claimed unfamiliarity with the area, which led him to reconsider the meeting. Despite this, the police were already involved, having been alerted by the decoy’s activities. When questioned, Nagy admitted to engaging in sexualised conversations with someone he believed was a 14-year-old male. His actions constituted attempts to communicate sexually with a minor and to incite a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity.

At Craigavon Crown Court, the prosecution outlined the details of the case, emphasizing Nagy’s intent and actions. Prosecutor Joseph Murphy explained that the decoy had created a false profile, and during their online chat, Nagy expressed his age and sent explicit images. The court heard that Nagy’s conduct was serious enough to warrant criminal charges.

Judge Patrick Lynch QC reviewed the evidence and made it clear that the severity of Nagy’s actions met the threshold for custodial sentencing. As a result, Nagy was sentenced to 20 months in prison, with the sentence to be served half in custody and the remaining half on licence. Nagy is scheduled to surrender himself to the authorities on the upcoming Monday, marking the conclusion of this troubling case involving online predatory behavior in Lisburn.
