NOEL LAING FROM DARLINGTON AND DURHAM SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Darlington and Durham, Noel Laing, a pensioner with deep roots in the Darlington area, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences involving minors.

Laing, aged 68, was convicted following a detailed trial at Teesside Crown Court. The court heard that he had committed a series of heinous acts, including five counts of indecent assault, three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, and inciting a child to participate in sexual acts. These offences spanned several years, during which his victims, who were minors at the time, endured fear and trauma that went unreported for a long period.

Judge Simon Bourne-Arton, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, described Laing as a “positive danger” to young children, emphasizing the severity of his actions and the threat he posed to the safety of minors in the community. The judge’s words underscored the gravity of the case and the need for a substantial custodial sentence to protect the public.

During the sentencing hearing, there were audible expressions of support from the public gallery, with shouts of “yes” as the judge announced the eight-year term. Laing, who resides on Bede Avenue on the Sherburn Road estate in Durham, was represented by Carl Swift, who argued that Laing had been of previously good character. Swift also highlighted Laing’s deteriorating health, suggesting that his physical condition would make imprisonment particularly difficult for him.

However, Judge Bourne-Arton acknowledged Laing’s health issues but stressed that they should not overshadow the suffering of his victims. The judge stated, “The only motivation was your own self-interest and gratification,” making it clear that the offences were driven by personal desire rather than any other factor.

The judge also pointed out that Laing’s victims had been too frightened to come forward at the time, fearing disbelief and retribution. This fear contributed to the offences remaining undetected for many years, allowing Laing to continue his abusive behaviour unchecked.

In addition to the prison sentence, Laing will be required to register as a sex offender for life. He will also be prohibited from seeking employment that involves contact with children under the age of 16, in an effort to prevent any further harm. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need to protect vulnerable minors from predatory individuals within the community.
