LIVERPOOL TEEN JAILED FOR BRUTAL CRICKET BAT ASSAULT AND SEXUAL ATTACK

A teenage thug was "given a significant chance" by a judge but threw it back in his face by smacking a boy in the head with a cricket bat and subjecting a girl to a "demeaning" sexual assault in Liverpool.

Nisar Rahimi was previously allowed to walk free from court over a violent altercation in Chavasse Park.

However, he has now been put behind bars after leaving a college student with a fractured skull and bleed on the brain by brutally battering him with a cricket bat in front of his "Eagle Gang" associates.

He then went on to target a vulnerable female during a house party as she pleaded for him to stop his sex attack.

Liverpool Crown Court heard today, Tuesday, that Rahimi, who was described as being "known to have links to the Eagle Gang", formed part of a group of teenagers who chased and surrounded a 17-year-old student who was walking near Hugh Baird College in Bootle on May 29 last year.

The boy, who was "isolated, late at night" was then assaulted by the youths, with the now 20-year-old defendant, of Brookdale Road in Wavertree, striking him to the head with a cricket bat.

Kevin Liston, prosecuting, outlined how the victim was knocked to the floor as a result, at which stage Rahimi again hit him with the weapon, this time to his back.

He suffered "multiple complex fractures to the face" as a result of the incident, as well as a fractured skull and a small bleed on the brain.

Having been charged in relation to this matter, Rahimi was subsequently released on bail by the crown court as the case progressed.

However, in the summer of this year, he then attended a party at a flat in Liverpool city centre where "alcohol and cocaine was consumed by those who were present".

At one stage, a girl who was in attendance went into a bedroom in order to make a phone call to one of her friends.

However, Rahimi followed her into the room and began performing a sex act, in spite of her protestations, before the "alarm was raised by the victim's friend" and police attended the address.

In a statement which was read out to the court on her behalf, the teenager said: "If I hadn't video called my friend, I don't know what would have happened to me.

What Rahimi did to me was disgusting." His criminal record shows one previous entry for violent disorder, having been handed a community order in relation to an incident in Chavasse Park which occurred between the attack with the baseball bat and the sexual assault.

This was said to have involved him "jumping up and down on" the complainant in the matter.

Rahimi, who was assisted by an interpreter during the hearing, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and sexual assault.

Appearing via video link to HMP Liverpool wearing a grey prison issue jumper, he was handed 39 months in a young offenders' institute.

Sentencing, Judge Simon Medland KC said: "You came to this country to escape from Afghanistan.

I do not doubt that there were serious problems there and that it may have seemed that this country was a safe haven for you.

So it would have been, if you had behaved in a pro-social and proper way." I recognised all of those factors when I sentenced you for the violent disorder in Chavasse Gardens.

I heard moving testimony from your social worker.

I considered your youth and personal circumstances.

In a case where, much more often than not, the outcome would have been immediate custody, I gave you a significant chance.

All might then have remained well.

However, I now have to sentence you for a serious offence of grievous bodily harm, an offence which you committed by using a cricket bat to hit a young man, who was only 17, on the head.

You caused him very serious injury, which could have easily led to him being permanently disabled or, indeed, losing his life.

That was not the actual outcome, but the risks were massive, as would inevitably be the case if you use a weapon like that on a young man.
