NIGEL RUMMEY FROM NEWBURY ESCAPES JAIL AFTER REPEATED OFFENSES INVOLVING CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In August 2022, Nigel Rummey, a resident of Oakley Road in Newbury, narrowly avoided imprisonment after being found in possession of indecent images of children for a second time. The case was heard at Reading Crown Court, where a judge acknowledged Rummey's prior conviction but expressed a belief that he was not entirely beyond hope for rehabilitation.

During the proceedings, it was revealed that Rummey, aged 56, had engaged in disturbing online activities, including sending indecent images of children to another male individual. Prosecutor Katie Jones detailed that Rummey had also boasted about engaging in penetrative sexual acts with a child and had collected pornography so extreme that it was classified as illegal under current laws.

The police executed a search warrant at Rummey’s residence, uncovering him in a state of undress with electronic devices nearby that contained the illicit images and conversations. The authorities confirmed that the devices held evidence of his involvement in sharing and possessing illegal material.

Rummey admitted to multiple charges, including publishing an obscene article, creating indecent photographs of children categorized as Category C, distributing extreme pornography, and sharing an indecent image of a child. These offenses took place within Newbury between June 4, 2017, and January 14 of the previous year.

Judge Amjad Nawaz addressed Rummey directly, stating, “You were, as far as these offences were concerned, engaged in a chatroom with someone known as Dan. You used a false identity to correspond and the nature of that correspondence was in relation to a child, purporting to be… engaged in penetrative sexual activity with her. The nature of the conversation was, one can assume, to encourage someone else [and was] disturbing, given your previous convictions.”

He further explained that a police warrant was executed after identifying Rummey’s IP address. When officers arrived at his home, they found him in his room, with his mobile phone and laptop turned on, and in a state of undress. During the police interview, Rummey chose to respond with “no comment,” the court was told.

Following a review of a pre-sentence report, Judge Nawaz highlighted that Rummey’s obsession with extreme pornography and indecent images had become all-consuming. The judge emphasized the importance of protecting the public from Rummey’s entrenched pattern of behavior but also expressed a belief that he was not entirely beyond redemption.

Consequently, Rummey was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to undergo a second treatment program, sign the Sex Offenders Register, and was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Additionally, he was required to pay costs amounting to £445, along with a statutory victim services surcharge.

Earlier in June 2022, Rummey had admitted to distributing indecent images of children at a hearing in Reading Magistrates’ Court. He faced four charges, including publishing obscene material, creating indecent photographs of children, distributing extreme pornography, and sharing an indecent image of a child. All these offenses occurred in Newbury between June 4, 2017, and January 14 of the previous year.

District Judge Samuel Goozee ordered that Rummey’s case be transferred to Reading Crown Court for sentencing, where he was released on unconditional bail while awaiting the final judgment. Rummey was represented by lawyer Gianpaolo Daminani during the proceedings.
