NIGEL HUNTER BALLYMENA DOG BREEDER CONVICTED FOR CRUELTY AND LICENCE OFFENSES

Nigel Hunter, a backyard dog breeder from Ballymena, has been found guilty of multiple charges related to the mistreatment and neglect of numerous animals. The case emerged after a thorough investigation by the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, which responded to reports indicating that puppies were being bred and sold under deplorable conditions in the Ballymena area.

Authorities conducted a search of Hunter's property located at 39 Woodside Road, Broughshane, Ballymena, under a warrant. During the search, animal welfare officers discovered a distressing scene: dogs and puppies living in conditions that were clearly unacceptable and detrimental to their health and well-being. The investigation revealed that Hunter had failed to meet the basic needs of these animals, which included proper shelter, nutrition, and care.

Following the discovery, a veterinarian was called to assess the animals. The vet's examination confirmed that a significant number of the dogs and puppies were suffering or were at imminent risk of suffering due to neglect. As a result, many of these animals were removed from Hunter's property to ensure their safety and well-being.

The animals involved in the case represented a variety of breeds, including German Shepherds, collies, spaniels, poodles, British Bulldogs, a Golden Retriever, a Yorkshire Terrier, a Bernese Mountain Dog, and a St. Bernard. Additionally, there were two hens found on the premises. Despite the severity of the neglect, Hunter was permitted to retain ownership of four or five dogs, which he claimed were kept as family pets.

Hunter faced multiple charges, including six counts of causing unnecessary suffering to animals, 23 counts of failing to meet the animals' needs, and one count of operating a dog breeding establishment without a valid license. These charges stemmed from the conditions observed and the evidence collected during the investigation.

In court, Hunter admitted to the charges against him. The sentencing included a three-month custodial sentence, which was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offense within that period. Additionally, Hunter was ordered to pay legal and veterinary costs amounting to £1,710.70. The court's decision did not specify any ban on him owning or breeding dogs in the future, raising concerns among animal welfare advocates.

This case highlights ongoing issues related to illegal and unethical dog breeding practices in the Ballymena area and underscores the importance of vigilant enforcement of animal welfare laws. The Ballymena Guardian and Northern Ireland World continue to monitor and report on such cases to promote awareness and accountability.
