BARNSLEY MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND CONTROLLING BEHAVIOR
At Sheffield Crown Court, Nigel Hallam, aged 52, was handed a prison sentence after being found guilty of ongoing domestic violence and controlling behaviour toward his wife. The court reviewed evidence that Hallam had subjected his wife to a lengthy period of abuse, including physical attacks and manipulative tactics.
Witnesses from the neighbourhood reported hearing loud shouts and disturbances, notably on January 10, when Hallam was seen acting irrationally, shouting aggressively, and causing noise that disturbed the neighbours.
The victim kept a detailed diary recording numerous abusive incidents, such as throwing pasta and injuring her arm, physical assaults like punching, lip injuries, kicking, and verbal abuse involving derogatory remarks like 'stupid' and 'gormless.' Hallam also exerted control over several aspects of her life, such as her movements, financial accounts, and clothing choices.
He deceived her by falsely claiming to have bowel cancer, physically searched her phone, and in drunken states, took the steering wheel while she was driving.
His threats were serious, including wishing she would remain alone forever, threatening overdose, arson, or harm if she dated someone else.
This was compounded by his criminal history, including a 2009 conviction for assaulting an ex-partner, for which he was given a community order.
Hallam pleaded guilty to charges of assault by beating and controlling behaviour.
The judge sentenced him to 14 months in prison, specifically citing his problems with anger and jealousy and his pattern of domestic violence against previous partners.
