NIGEL EVELY FROM TEIGNMOUTH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES AND INDECENT IMAGES

In May 2011, Nigel Evely, a 58-year-old resident of Teign View in Teignmouth, found himself at the center of a serious criminal case involving child exploitation and possession of indecent images. The case unfolded at Exeter Crown Court, where Evely faced multiple charges related to his online activities and the possession of illicit material.

It was revealed during the proceedings that Evely had engaged in online chat rooms where he boasted about having sexual encounters with children. He also exchanged indecent images with other individuals who shared similar perverted interests. Despite these claims turning out to be false, Evely admitted to police that he harbored a sexual interest in children, which was a significant factor in the case.

The police investigation uncovered that Evely had previously admitted to six counts of making and possessing indecent photographs of children, along with three counts of distributing such images. Prosecutor Nigel Wraith explained that Evely, who lived alone, initially claimed that he was searching for adult pornography online. However, he later confessed that his online activity also included seeking images of pre-teen children.

Authorities examined two of Evely’s computers, which contained a total of 345 still images and four video files. These materials were classified on a severity scale from level one to level five, with level five indicating the most serious content. The images and videos depicted a range of disturbing material, reflecting the severity of his offenses.

Further investigation revealed that Evely accessed internet chat rooms through a picture-sharing platform, which has since been shut down. This platform was used to facilitate his exchanges and communications related to his illicit interests.

During the court proceedings, Evely was represented by William Parkhill, who acknowledged that the images involved were of a 'dreadful nature.' He emphasized that his client did not attempt to minimize the gravity of his crimes. The prosecution painted a grim picture of Evely’s actions, highlighting the disturbing content he had accessed and shared.

Judge Philip Wassall delivered the verdict, describing Evely’s fantasies as shocking, even for someone in his position to read about. Despite the severity of the crimes, the judge took into account Evely’s willingness to admit his problems and his understanding of his behavior. As a result, he was sentenced to nine months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years. The judge expressed hope that Evely could be rehabilitated and become a 'trustworthy and decent member of society.'

Police officials stated that Evely demonstrated enough insight into his actions to suggest he could be monitored safely within the community, and he was considered a candidate for a sexual offenders treatment program aimed at preventing future offenses.
