NIGEL EDWARDS SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENDER SCANDAL IN GRIMSBY AND MALVERN

In a startling revelation that has sent shockwaves through the community, Nigel Edwards, a man with a troubling past, was recently removed from a youth radio project in Grimsby, Humberside, after his history as a convicted child sex offender was uncovered. Edwards, who previously resided in Malvern, has a criminal record dating back to the late 1990s, which has now come to light amid concerns over safeguarding and vetting procedures for individuals working with children.

Back in 1997, Edwards was sentenced to four and a half years in prison after being convicted of three separate sexual assaults involving a 14-year-old boy from Malvern. The assaults took place at Edwards' residence on Redland Road, and the case was heard at Hereford Crown Court, where Judge David Matthews handed down the sentence. The offences were committed in 1992, but the victim did not come forward until 1996, leading to Edwards' subsequent arrest and conviction. During the trial, Edwards faced two counts of serious sexual assault and one count of indecent assault.

Beyond this conviction, Edwards' past includes a 1994 case in which he received a two-year probation sentence for indecently assaulting a 15-year-old boy. He was also mandated to attend a sex offenders' therapy program as part of his sentence. Notably, Edwards was a former lay member of the General Synod and was known to have befriended the teenage victim through their shared involvement in a choir, which added a layer of personal complexity to the case.

Despite his criminal history, Edwards was working as a freelance radio broadcaster and journalist, primarily involved in marketing, press, and publicity roles. He had been freelancing for Inverse Communications, a company that manages youth radio projects in Sussex and, more recently, in Grimsby. However, his past was not on the sexual offenders' register at the time of his conviction because such a register did not exist in 1997. This omission has raised questions about the effectiveness of vetting procedures at the time.

When Edwards was assigned to a youth radio project in Grimsby this week, concerns about his background surfaced, leading to the immediate suspension of the project. Inverse Communications issued a statement emphasizing that Edwards had never been unsupervised with young people during any of his work. The company also clarified that they had not previously conducted a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check on him due to the nature of his work but have now committed to screening all current and future staff members thoroughly.

The controversy surrounding Edwards' employment highlights ongoing issues regarding the employment of convicted sex offenders in roles involving children. The case echoes the national debate sparked by the Soham murders, where Ian Huntley, who had a history of sexual misconduct, was able to secure employment in a school in Soham before committing the tragic murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. The incident prompted a tightening of vetting procedures and background checks for individuals working with vulnerable children across the country.
