NICK WILBURN AND RYAN WILBURN CONVICTED OF ANIMAL CRUELTY IN MANCHESTER

Serial animal abuser Nicholas John Wilburn, also known as Nick Maddock, from Little Hulton, Manchester, has been convicted following charges related to cruelty and illegal animal ownership. Born on October 19, 1990, Wilburn was previously banned from keeping animals for three years in November 2016 after cruelty offences involving a wounded cat named Jasper.

Wilburn had self-diagnosed and treated Jasper with a homemade remedy consisting of alcohol applied directly to the cat's open wound, a treatment the RSPCA officers say would have caused the animal additional pain and suffering. He later advised another individual to use the same treatment when passing the care of Jasper to them. Wilburn's irresponsible actions left Jasper in agony.

At the time, Wilburn was involved with Bolton-based exotic pet rescue MagnaRep, which was later renamed Nick’s Ark. The rescue was shut down in April 2017 after an RSPCA raid. During the subsequent trial, five individuals, including Wilburn’s mother Sue Maddock, were cleared of charges.

Nick Wilburn (also known as Nick Maddock) and his former partner Ryan Wilburn, born July 29, 1991, of Epping Drive, Sale, Trafford M33 5LN, were both found guilty of cruelty offences. Ryan Wilburn was convicted of aiding and abetting the breach of the disqualification order and owning a bush viper without a license.

Prosecutor Anna McDonald stated that the RSPCA is currently caring for 70 animals seized during the raid, with some having died following the operation. Sara-Lise Howe, defending Nicholas Wilburn, emphasized his role as a caregiver for his mother and a disabled woman, highlighting that Wilburn suffers from anxiety and depression. She argued that his involvement with animals kept him from taking medication and that his health is adversely affected by the ongoing disqualification.

The court imposed a further five-year ban on Wilburn owning animals, with Judge John Temperley expressing concern about the risk Wilburn poses to animals. The judge highlighted Wilburn’s serious and persistent breaches of previous orders, noting his disregard for the court’s directives and the potential harm to numerous animals at Nick’s Ark.

Regarding Ryan Wilburn, the judge acknowledged his misguided sense of loyalty to Wilburn but stated that Ryan participated only in basic care tasks like feeding and cleaning under Nick’s instructions. The judge described Nick as the dominant partner in their relationship and ultimately decided Ryan did not pose a danger to animals, allowing him to avoid a disqualification order.

Sentencing details included: Nick Wilburn received a 12-week suspended prison sentence, 200 hours of unpaid work, and a £500 fine, along with a five-year ban (which will expire in February 2024). Ryan Wilburn was sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid work and a £500 fine, with no ban imposed.
