NEIL WOODWARD SHOCKS HINDHEAD WITH SICKENING SEX OFFENSES AGAINST YOUNG BOYS

In September 1998, Neil Woodward, aged 29, of Hampton Terrace, Beacon Hill, Hindhead, was sentenced to prison after admitting to a series of heinous sexual offenses involving young boys. The charges against him included nine counts of indecent assault and gross indecency committed over a period spanning from February 1992 to September 1997. These crimes, which shocked the local community, revealed a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior by a man who was widely regarded as a respected figure in Hindhead and the surrounding areas.

Woodward’s reputation as a pillar of the community was shattered as details of his misconduct emerged during the proceedings at Crown Court last week. He had held numerous roles that placed him in positions of trust and influence, including youth worker with the YMCA in Guildford, a field worker for the Surrey Association of Youth Clubs, a youth worker for Surrey County Council, a scout leader in Haslemere, a special constable for Surrey Police, and even served as chairman of the Haslemere Youth Action Group. Additionally, he was involved in various church-based projects within the Diocese of Guildford, further amplifying the betrayal of trust.

Prosecutor David Jeremy emphasized that the charges presented in court were merely a sample of a much wider pattern of offending. The court heard harrowing details of Woodward’s interactions with his victims, which included a scout who became friendly with him. During a holiday with the scout troupe, Woodward sexually assaulted the boy in a shower and gave him £5. Several months later, on the boy’s 13th birthday, he approached Woodward again, seeking money. Woodward responded by giving him £10 in exchange for a sex act in a store room. The abuse escalated as the boy, now 15 and in debt, approached Woodward once more, who paid him £100 for another sexual encounter. These assaults became increasingly frequent, with Woodward paying the boy £20 for a sex act in a shower, and continuing the abuse even after the boy moved into his own flat.

Further disturbing details revealed that Woodward showed the boy internet pictures, which added to the emotional trauma. The victim’s mental health was severely affected, leading to anger, disruptive behavior, and difficulties with his parents. The court heard that the boy struggled to understand his own sexuality due to the abuse.

Another victim, of a similar age, was coerced into standing naked in the headlights of Woodward’s car, receiving money and cigarettes in exchange. This victim eventually left home, became involved in drugs, and severed ties with his family and friends. A third boy, a member of a church youth group, was also targeted. Woodward showed him internet pictures and assaulted him in a lavatory. On a subsequent occasion, after giving the boy a lift home, Woodward committed another sexual offense. The predator also took the boy to a commonland area, where they engaged in a naked run, and Woodward paid him £30 to climb a tree while naked.

Woodward was arrested on May 7 and taken in for questioning. Initially denying the allegations, he later made a partial admission of guilt. His defense attorney, Andrew Turton, presented a substantial collection of references, letters, press cuttings, and testimonials, including some from Woodward’s family, an Anglican priest, and even the defendant himself. Turton argued that Woodward had struggled with his own sexuality, repressing his feelings and experiencing significant stress and distress as a result. He emphasized that Woodward had dedicated much of his life to serving others, contributing positively to the community and benefiting countless young people.

Despite these mitigating factors, Judge Addison condemned Woodward’s actions, stating that he had abused his position of trust to seduce three boys. The judge described Woodward’s behavior as disgraceful and emphasized the profound betrayal of trust involved in his crimes, which had caused lasting harm to his victims and tarnished his reputation in Hindhead and beyond.
