NEIL SOUTER'S CRUELTY IN MIDDLESBROUGH: DOGS ENDURE YEARS OF SUFFERING

Neil Patrick Souter, a resident of Middlesbrough, was found guilty in 2019 of severe animal neglect that caused prolonged suffering to his three pet terriers, Boyo, Vino, and Baby. Souter, born on 29 November 1960 and residing at Blakey Walk, TS6 8BB, failed to provide necessary veterinary care for his dogs over a span of five years, leading to their tragic decline in health.

Prosecutor Stewart Haywood described the distressing scene to the court, highlighting the deplorable conditions within Souter's home. An inspection revealed a foul smell permeating the house, and all three dogs were in a state of severe neglect. Baby, one of the terriers, was found asleep but with noticeable fur loss, indicating untreated medical issues. The other two dogs exhibited growths, blackened skin, and dental problems, all signs of neglect and untreated disease.

Specifically, Baby was suffering from tumorous masses on her bottom and right foot, rendering her unable to walk and causing her significant pain for at least two weeks. Souter admitted to being aware of the lump on Baby, claiming it had been present for approximately five years. During the inspection, Souter was observed to be under the influence of alcohol, with an open bottle nearby. When the RSPCA inspector arrived, Souter exited the house shouting that Vino was going to be taken away and euthanized. Despite his initial outburst, he eventually calmed down and allowed the inspector to remove the dogs.

All three dogs displayed skin that was black, thickened, and flaky, indicative of untreated conditions likely caused by fleas. Boyo and Vino also suffered from dental disease, which had caused them pain and suffering for at least six months. Tragically, all three dogs either were euthanized or died due to their extensive health issues.

Souter claimed to accept ownership of the dogs and insisted he had done what he could to care for their health. However, a probation officer testified that Souter was resistant during questioning and suggested that photographs of the neglect had been tampered with by the RSPCA. His solicitor, Paul McGee, argued that Souter, who had no prior convictions, was paranoid and believed that others were out to harm him. The defense also highlighted his personal struggles, including blindness in one eye, a fear of leaving home, and recent family bereavements, as mitigating factors.

Despite these arguments, District Judge Natalie Wortley dismissed any plea for leniency. She emphasized the severity and duration of the neglect, stating, “This is a case that involved prolonged neglect and a high level of suffering. I have heard you were extremely loyal to those dogs and loved those dogs but you neglected them severely.”

As a result, Souter was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115, and disqualified from owning animals for five years, a ban that will expire in September 2024.
