NEIL POUNDFORD'S REPEATED BUSES BARRAGE IN CASTLEFORD AND WAKEFIELD
In a series of disturbing incidents spanning several years, Neil Poundford, a known offender from Castleford, has repeatedly breached court orders designed to restrict his use of public transportation due to his history of sexual offenses. His actions have prompted multiple convictions, jail sentences, and court warnings, highlighting a persistent pattern of risky and illegal behavior. In February 2021, Poundford, aged 61, was caught by police boarding an Arriva bus just 12 days after his previous breach of a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO). The court was informed that Poundford was seen getting onto the bus service on Castleford Road in Normanton. He disembarked at Wakefield Bus Station and then caught another bus heading towards Westgate. Remarkably, within twenty minutes, he was seen boarding yet another bus back into Wakefield city centre. The following day, he repeated these journeys, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the court’s restrictions.
During the hearing, prosecutor Kristian Cavanagh detailed these events, emphasizing that Poundford had been observed on the Arriva 187 service. Poundford, of Pioneer Way, Castleford, admitted to six breaches of his SHPO, which had been initially imposed in 2017 after he was jailed for 16 months for two separate sexual assault offenses. The first incident involved him touching a 17-year-old girl’s face and arm after attempting to engage her in conversation on a bus traveling between Wakefield and Dewsbury. Despite being arrested and released on bail, Poundford continued his offending spree, targeting a 13-year-old girl at a bus stop in Horbury, Wakefield, two months later. He made inappropriate comments about her jeans and touched her knee and face, further illustrating his pattern of predatory behavior.
During the latest court appearance, Poundford appeared via video link from HMP Leeds, unrepresented and eager to be sentenced. When questioned about his actions, he claimed he needed to travel into Wakefield to organize his benefits and medication, as he lacked the skills to do so online. He also stated he needed to buy clothes after his release from prison. Poundford insisted that he only boards buses when necessary and claimed to be cautious, getting off immediately if women are present, asserting he was not a danger.
Judge Geoffrey Marson QC sentenced Poundford to 16 months in prison, condemning his repeated breaches as seriously aggravated. The judge emphasized that Poundford was fully aware of the restrictions and deliberately flouted them, which constituted blatant and intentional violations of court orders. The judge’s stern remarks underscored the seriousness of his persistent misconduct and the need for custodial measures to protect the public.
Earlier, in May 2020, Poundford was again detained for breaching his SHPO during the COVID-19 lockdown. Police officers spotted him traveling alone on a bus from Normanton to Wakefield, despite the court order banning him from unaccompanied travel for ten years. He was arrested and admitted guilt, stating he traveled alone because he did not know any responsible adults to accompany him. This was his third breach of the order, which had been initially imposed after his 2017 convictions. His previous offenses involved targeting teenage girls on buses, including an incident where he sat next to a 17-year-old girl, touched her, and made inappropriate comments, causing her to feel frightened and uncomfortable.
In August 2019, Poundford was jailed again after being caught boarding buses in Wakefield, despite a court order forbidding him from doing so. He was seen approaching a female at a bus stop and boarding a bus on Barnsley Road and Ings Road, with police arresting him at Wakefield Westgate. His repeated breaches, including a May 2019 incident where he was caught traveling to a chemist, demonstrated his ongoing disregard for legal restrictions. During his court appearances, Poundford often claimed he was only traveling for essential reasons, such as collecting prescriptions or visiting the library, but his actions consistently contradicted these claims.
Throughout these incidents, Poundford’s history of sexual assault and breaches of court orders has painted a troubling picture of a man who repeatedly flouts legal restrictions designed to protect vulnerable individuals. His behavior has led to multiple jail sentences, with courts repeatedly emphasizing the seriousness of his persistent misconduct and the importance of custodial sentences to prevent further harm. Despite his claims of remorse and intentions to comply in the future, his actions suggest a pattern of dangerous behavior that continues to pose a risk to the public, especially women and teenage girls traveling alone on public transport in Castleford, Wakefield, and surrounding areas.
