NEAL HARRIS AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ABUSE IN BRISTOL AND SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Neal Harris, a football coach based in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, has been sentenced to four years in prison for engaging in sexual activities with two underage girls under his care.

Harris, aged 25 and residing on Rectory Close in Yate, was a trainee primary school teacher at the time of the offenses and had exploited his position of trust to commit these heinous acts.

The incidents came to light during a hearing at Bristol Crown Court, where evidence revealed Harris’s inappropriate conduct involving two female teenagers.

The court heard that he first assaulted a 14-year-old girl, engaging in sexual touching and kissing her without her consent.

Additionally, he pursued a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl, which occurred just one month before she turned 16.

Harris pleaded guilty to charges of sexual activity with a child and abusing his position of trust in relation to both victims.

Judge James Patrick sentenced Harris to four years behind bars.

In his remarks, the judge emphasized the betrayal of trust, stating, “You were their coach.

You were training to be a primary school teacher.

You used your position to groom these two girls, who were significantly younger than you.” Furthermore, Harris was prohibitioned from working with children and vulnerable adults and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Prosecutor James Tucker detailed the extent of Harris’s misconduct.

He recounted that Harris, at age 21, had been involved in sexually inappropriate conduct with a 14-year-old girl, which included kissing and touching above her clothes.

The prosecution revealed that this girl developed strong feelings for Harris, who, at one point, shared a risqué photograph of himself in stained pants with her, saying, “Look what you do to me.” The girl felt uncomfortable about these exchanges but initially found it difficult to report or confide in anyone.

The court heard that Harris told this girl they should wait until she was 18 before engaging in any sexual activity.

Instead, he hugged her on a bed and kissed her stomach.

The misconduct then shifted to another girl he coached, with whom he established a romantic and sexual relationship after social media exchanges.

Their encounters took place shortly before her 16th birthday.

The second girl expressed worry about losing her virginity, but Harris reassured her and engaged in sexual activities using condoms.

He also bought her a ring and Christmas gifts, and their sexual encounters occurred at his home and inside his car.

When Harris was arrested, he denied having any inappropriate contact with the first girl and insisted he had not engaged in sexual activity with the second girl before she turned 16.

Defense counsel Virginia Cornwall described Harris as a reserved individual suffering from a lack of self-worth and confidence.

She argued that while the abuse was committed in his role as a football coach, Harris was aware that his actions were wrong, especially considering his aspirations to become a primary school teacher.

Cornwall added that Harris felt flattered by the attention from the second girl and claimed that their sexual encounters were consensual.

Investigating officer DS Geoff Smith condemned Harris’s conduct, stating, “Neal Harris abused his position of trust in the worst way possible and took advantage of two teenage girls with whom he was in contact through his football coaching.

He groomed the victims, who believed they were in a relationship with him, and he used social media as a tool to communicate.

Harris manipulated them into keeping their relationship secret.

He met them in parks, woods, car-parks, and public places, including behind a supermarket, where much of the abuse took place.

The victims now understand they were groomed, and the lasting impact of these offenses will affect them throughout their lives.” Support organizations such as The Bridge provide medical, emotional, and practical support for those affected by sexual assault and abuse.
