NAZIR AHMED SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN CARDIFF
A former shopkeeper from Ely, Cardiff, has been sentenced to a significant prison term of 12 years after being convicted of serious child sex offences that occurred more than twenty-five years ago.Nazir Ahmed, aged 73, was employed as a shop manager at a local store in Ely when he committed these heinous acts.
The criminal case came to light after the female victim, who was a teenage girl at the time, summoned the courage to come forward more than two decades later.
She contacted South Wales Police to report that she had been subjected to repeated sexual abuse by Ahmed during her employment at his shop.
Her decision to break a silence after such a long period exemplifies remarkable bravery given the emotional and psychological toll that such revelations can entail.
During her time working under Ahmed’s supervision, she was exploited in positions of trust and authority, as he used his role as the store manager to systematically prey on her vulnerability over an extended period.
The nature of the offences was grave enough to warrant a full trial, which took place at Cardiff Crown Court.
After considering the evidence presented, the court found Nazir Ahmed guilty on three counts of child rape.
The sentencing on June 1, 2023, reflected the severity of his actions, with the court ruling that he serve 12 years in prison.
Moreover, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring strict monitoring of his activities post-release.
Detective Mike Lewis, who led the investigation, emphasized the importance of the victim’s role in achieving justice.
He stated, “The victim has to be given a massive amount of credit for her courage and bravery in reporting the offences and pursuing the case through the Criminal Justice System, which is an incredibly difficult and emotional process for victims of such offences.” He also highlighted the significance of the case in demonstrating that justice can be served regardless of how much time has passed since the offence was committed.
“We are proud to be able to bring a dangerous offender to justice many years after the crime had been committed.
This case shows that those targeting the most vulnerable in society cannot get away with their crimes, and justice will always catch up with them,” Detective Lewis remarked.
The investigation encourages others who have experienced similar crimes to come forward and report incidents to the authorities, regardless of the delay in doing so.
The police assure full support and thorough investigations for all victims, reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding vulnerable members of the community in Cardiff and beyond.
