NATHAN MULVANA SENTENCED IN HULL FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS

In December 2018, a disturbing case unfolded in Hull involving a teenage boy named Nathan Mulvana, who committed serious sexual offenses against two young girls.

The case drew significant attention due to the gravity of the crimes and the impact on the victims, who were both under the age of ten at the time of the incidents.

According to court proceedings, Nathan Mulvana, who was 18 years old at the time of sentencing, had previously exposed himself to both girls and later went on to sexually assault the younger of the two.

The assaults reportedly occurred when Mulvana was 16 or 17 years old.

Despite the evidence presented and his convictions, Mulvana continued to deny any wrongdoing, maintaining his innocence throughout the legal process.

The case initially appeared before Hull Magistrates' Court, where Mulvana faced charges of exposure and sexual touching of a girl under 13.

However, the severity of his offenses prompted the district judge to transfer the case to Hull Crown Court, recognizing that the magistrates' sentencing powers were insufficient to address the seriousness of the crimes.

At Hull Crown Court, Mulvana was sentenced to 28 months in prison on a Thursday.

During the sentencing, the court heard a victim statement from one of the girls' parents.

The statement revealed the profound and lasting effects of the abuse on the young girl, noting that she had become more introverted and self-conscious since the incidents.

The parent described her as no longer as happy or bubbly as she had been before the abuse.

The young girl also experienced significant fear, avoiding going to the toilet for several months, which led to bedwetting.

Fortunately, her parent added that she was gradually regaining her confidence.

Prosecutor Kirsten Mercer highlighted that Mulvana had told the girls that what he had done was a secret and instructed them not to tell anyone.

Despite his warnings, both victims immediately confided in their parents and other family members, demonstrating their courage in the face of trauma.

Judge David Tremberg addressed the court, emphasizing that Mulvana's crimes were too serious to be dealt with through anything other than immediate imprisonment.

He described the attack on the younger girl as a "degrading and serious sexual assault".

The judge also reflected on the long-term consequences of such abuse, stating, "Sometimes it takes years, sometimes decades, for the full effects of such abuse to manifest itself, and these courts see all too often the legacy of such abuse; how some people are never able to move on, and it affects their relationships, their sexual relationships, their feeling of self-worth." In his sentencing remarks, Judge Tremberg expressed hope that the victims would not fall into the category of individuals unable to recover from their trauma.

Mulvana, who resides at The Quadrant in north Hull, was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was also subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period, aimed at safeguarding the community and preventing further offenses.
