NATHAN CRITCHLOW AND LIVERPOOL: PAEDOPHILE WALKED FREE DESPITE GATHERING A REPULSIVE CHILD SEX IMAGE COLLECTION

A man named Nathan Critchlow, a convicted paedophile who secretly downloaded over 1,500 child abuse images, has been released from court despite concerns over his risk to children.

Critchlow, 25 years old, amassed a collection described as 'foul, obscene and revolting.' During court proceedings, it was revealed he had downloaded 1,529 images of child sex abuse.

Critchlow claimed he was struggling with drug and alcohol abuse at the time and now states he is 'cured' of his paedophilia.

However, Judge Ian Harris made it clear he did not accept this claim and insisted that Critchlow should complete a sex offender treatment programme to address the risk he still poses.

Liverpool Crown Court was told that police raided Critchlow’s home on Wolverton Street, Anfield, on September 4, 2020.

Officers confiscated his laptop and iPhone and, during interviews, Critchlow denied possessing indecent images.

However, subsequent examinations proved otherwise, revealing images downloaded between February 2018 and September 2020.

Prosecutor Derek Jones stated that Critchlow had searched online using terms like 'boy a***', 'boy a***', and 'nonce Liverpool'.

The evidence showed he downloaded illegal files labeled with titles such as 'toddler rape' and '10-year-old boys' from cloud storage services Mega and Dropbox.

Among the files were 431 Category A images—indicating the most severe abuse— including five videos, one of which depicted an eight-year-old boy being raped.

Additionally, Critchlow stored 328 Category B and 754 Category C images, along with 12 extreme pornographic files involving bestiality.

Critchlow was interviewed again on April 27 last year, when he was confronted with the evidence but declined to comment.

He later admitted to three counts of downloading and one of possessing indecent images of children, as well as possessing extreme pornographic material.

Although Critchlow had no prior convictions as an adult, he received a conditional caution for battery during his youth.

The court heard a letter from his mother, sitting at the back of the courtroom, expressing her concern about his behaviour.

Defence lawyer Peter White explained that Critchlow's mother was unable to work due to health issues and that her son was acting as her primary carer.

Mr.

White acknowledged that at the time of the offending, Critchlow was heavily using alcohol and cocaine and also suffers from ADHD.

He emphasized that every image and video involved an innocent victim, asserting that without the demand for such material, such abuse might not occur—an understanding Critchlow accepts.

Mr.

White stressed that since the police raid, Critchlow had committed no further offences and had been honest in pre-sentence reports about his motivations.

He also highlighted that Critchlow had been a victim of ill-treatment himself during school and in the workplace.

He urged the court to avoid jail so his client could participate in a treatment programme designed for adults with learning difficulties, which fits Critchlow's profile.

Judge Harris reviewed the evidence, noting the collection of images took place over more than two years, behind his mother's back.

"This isn't a one-off; this is over a lengthy period," the judge said.

"Your mother would not have tolerated this had you been open about it.

You claim to be cured—but I do not accept that." The judge described the images as 'foul, obscene and revolting,' emphasizing the suffering of victims and the harm caused by the illegal market Critchlow contributed to by viewing such material.

He pointed out that perpetuating this market fuels further exploitation and harm to children.

While expressing concern about Critchlow’s deep-rooted issues, the judge acknowledged a 'realistic prospect of rehabilitation.' He reasoned that imprisonment alone would deny Critchlow the chance to undergo essential treatment that could reduce his risk to children.

Ultimately, Recorder Harris sentenced Critchlow to 15 months in prison, suspended for two years, with requirements including participation in a sex offender treatment programme, a 25-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, and 160 hours of unpaid work.
